Shelly's 36th Birthday

I had such a fun birthday week! Here are a few photos...
William doesn't have that baby look anymore. He looks like a little man!

Here is a video Dwayne took. You know how he loves his videos!

My sister and bro-in-law came by and she brought over a home baked cake and pasta salad!

Dwayne took me out to my favorite restaurant and we had some amazing drinks at the bar. I got some nice little goodies and had a great day of relaxation!

I'm famous!

I am sure most of you who read Momfiles regularly know I am a dedicated Kroger shopper. I shop there at least 5 times per week (sometimes a couple trips per day). I was asked to say something I like about Kroger and had my photo taken. I was surprised to see it posted when I walked into the store today. This is a camera phone shot so it's not that clear. I just had to share :)

Need vegetarian meal ideas

Not to confuse anyone but we are NOT vegetarians in our house. I just wanted to change things up a bit and try some healthier meal options that don't include meat. I wanted to know if anyone has some good ideas as long as there are no soybeans or tofu involved. I was thinking about 2-3 times per week we would incorporate meatless meals. So please please please share your ideas!

A message if you are NOT a parent

If you have no kids then please listen up to this valuable advice. If you want to buy a gift for someone's kid and you want to maintain a happy relationship with that person then never buy musical toys. Mr. Giraffe might not make it through the day. Just wanted to share and help preserve long lasting friendships or family bonds.

H1N1- Do it or not?

Getting the H1N1 vaccination has been the talk of the nation as well as the #1 subject in the Ismail household. We have been debating over and over about what to do. Many years ago when Dwayne worked in a big corporation (and the economy was stable) the company paid for all employees to get a traditional flu shot. Dwayne got his and ended up with the flu a couple weeks later. I think this had made me feel negatively about the flu shot as far as the fact that there is no guarantee you will not get sick. It's simply a preventative measure. Now with this newer strain of flu in the air we all have to make decisions on how we will handle things for our families. We did so much research and watched at least a dozen documentaries and still it seems like a tough choice as to what we should do.

Our kids' schools are offering the vaccine free of charge to the student body on a first come first served basis. We have declined. As a family we have decided to take some alternative precautions. We are all thankfully in optimal health so we are taking vitamin D and C supplements as well as incorporating some healthy food choices full of these vitamins as well. That accompanied by good hand washing and getting ample rest and exercise will hopefully keep us healthy. If we do get ill we will immediately report to the doctor and not try to wait it out. This was such a hard decision for us and I really hope it was the right one. It's one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't scenarios.

What about you? Did you get either the flu shot or H1N1 shot? Have you had the swine flu or any of your family members? I wonder if our President got one.

I was craving these

I was on Facebook and noticed that one of my friends became a "fan of" Sonic and I got to thinking about onion rings. 30 minutes later this is the trouble I got myself into in the kitchen!

Don't let the cute face fool you

I snapped some photos of Hurricane Willie in the act of being naughty. He should NOT be standing on this trunk. See the blanket on the floor? It's Milo's (our chihuahua) and Will moves it so he can stand on Milo's trunk. Yes our dog has a trunk at the front window. He likes to see the goings on in the neighborhood, don't judge!

Look at that devilish little grin.

He always smiles AFTER the act of mischief. Dwayne does the same thing. Bad tail.

He gets a kick out of sitting on the fireplace. It's a little scary and Dwayne actually thinks we will still be able to burn fires this winter, yeah okay.

He looks like he is planning his next caper!

We received 4 e-movie cash certificates ($12 each) and one (1) free coupon (up to $6 value) for a General Mills cereal. After purchasing two cereals, visit generalmills.com/moviecash to enter the code found inside each box of cereal and print your free movie certificate good for admission to any movie. Vent Day Wednesday

Welcome to this week's 'throwback' edition of Vent Day Wednesday. We decided to put this video up since we have acquired a new audience of VDW viewers who may have never seen this one. Also this video will make my last post make sense. If you are a fan of watching the black Archie Bunker laugh himself to tears then this is the one to watch. Don't forget to leave your vents in the comments!

The Jimmy Hoffa drawers

If you have been a long-time Vent Day watcher then you will know exactly why I titled this post like I did. For those who have no clue these would be my junk drawers that Dwayne gets annoyed with. I say they are chock full of great little things that you might need some day. It beats having a big office downstairs filled with boxes of....well I don't know exactly. Tell me, don't we all have at least one drawer in our home that resembles this?

Breast Cancer Awareness-Pink Together® Giveaway

I am sure most of you are aware that it is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I don't think I know of a single person that has not been affected by this awful disease in some way. Whether it is a friend, family member or even someone you don't know personally we all are touched in some way. There is an amazing online community on MySpace where those touched by breast cancer can connect and provide support, comfort, and encouragement to one another. It is called Pink Together®. Pink Together®, a national campaign to support those impacted by breast cancer and to help raise awareness of the disease. To support Pink Together, General Mills is donating $2 million to Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and is turning the packaging pink next month on an assortment of its most beloved brands. General Mills will also donate $1, up to $20,000, each time you post a comment of encouragement, send a virtual flower bouquet or share a story on PinkTogether.com in October. I would encourage you to read a few of the stories on this site. I sent a few virtual flowers as well as left encouraging comments to uplift family members and friends.

In the Ismail house we have been purchasing as many of our
food products packaged in pink to show support. We always donate to a team that does the Cancer Walk each year. We also collect the Yoplait Yogurt lids (the pink ones) and mail them in. Yoplait donates 10 cents per lid and lids must be received before 12/31/09. It's a small way to give especially in a tough economy. Remember that every little bit counts!

I was fortunate to receive a beautiful Inspiring Hope gift basket from MyBlogSpark. The Inspiring Hope gift basket includes a sleeved travel mug, a running ribbon charm bracelet, a pink leather strap keychain, a pink cinch bag, and a set of inspirational note cards (retail value of $59) It is a beautiful gift and the quality is really great. All of the gift basket items are from ShopKomen.com, where 25 percent of the merchandise purchase price benefits Susan G. Komen for the Cure® in the fight against breast cancer.

MyBlogSpark has graciously offered for one lucky Momfiles reader to win this Inspiring Hope gift basket. Here's how to enter:

E.V.O.O. saved dinner!

This morning I was washing up some chicken wings and preparing to season them up to cook for dinner. I still had to decide how I wanted to cook them. Do I want to broil, barbecue, bake or fry? After about 10 minutes I decided to fry them since I only fry 2-3 times per year. I just don't like what the house smells like when I fry so normally if we eat fried foods it is when we eat out. So I season these big wings to perfection and I pull out the old Fry Daddy and proceed to pour in the oil. This is where we run into a problem. I only had enough Canola oil to fill the deep fryer half way to the fill line. I became annoyed at this point. I glanced over on my counter and saw my bottle of extra-virgin olive oil. I have heard of people using olive oil for deep frying but never really considered doing it myself. My mind was so set on fried chicken so I grabbed the olive oil and poured it into the fryer. I lightly coated the wings with some flour and dropped the first few pieces in. I was so impressed with how they cooked up perfectly golden brown and crispy. The true test was the taste. They were perfect. Not greasy at all and quite frankly even better than if I used 100% Canola oil! I just had to snap a photo. Don't they look delicious?

Getting rid of stuff, maybe

I was perusing through the baby aisle today and was checking out all the neat gadgets and cool things they make for babies/toddlers today. There is something for everything, it's really amazing. I was looking at a few things that I have/had for William that technically we could have easily lived without...baby wipes warmer, bottle warmer with cooler attached, infant swing, crib toys and the list goes on. Funny thing is we barely even used that stuff or used them for a very short time! I am considering doing the EBay thing as I have seen a lot of parents do. I guess the idea of all the time it will take to gather, inventory, photograph and list it all makes me not want to do it. I have a whole storage closet under the stairs downstairs filled with baby stuff. Why do I keep it?? I feel like I am not quite ready to part with certain things.

**on another note...I wanted to welcome Tanyetta back to the blog world!

I love Fall

I am sitting in my office at the computer and feeling a subtle cool breeze sweep across my legs and the backs of my arms. I just love it. Fall. It is so nice to open up the windows and let some cool, fresh air in. It's so nice to drive down the road and have leaves come down over your windshield as if they were raindrops or snowflakes. This truly is my favorite time of year. Of course living in South Carolina means you are still subject to a few more Summer-like days before the true Autumn air settles in for a while. I put my Fall tablecloth on the dining table and I will go to the store to buy a scarecrow for my front yard. We will take William to the pumpkin patch of course and it is going to be an adventure this year. With all of his running and climbing he will really get to enjoy the experience this time around.

Weekend wrap-up

I spent the weekend doing a whole lot of random things that thankfully kept me close to my family. I was so glad to see everyone in one place all at the same time! The girls schedules are so hectic with school, volleyball practice (5-7 days a week), volleyball games and homework. Some nights Chardie does not get home until 10:00 and has to be to her early bird class at 7:30 am. With all of that I am proud that both girls are maintaining their grades (A's) and still try to keep up with their responsibilities at home. I really do miss them a lot.

We spent Saturday at a tournament for Brie and Sunday we did some 'girls only' shopping. I bought myself a whole entire set of makeup and will be throwing away all of the stuff I currently own. This is my first step to trying to take more time out to take care of myself. Next step is a new haircut. I am playing around with a few ideas. I am thinking long sexy layers. Then again, maybe a choppy short cut? I have to find a photo and then go from there. I have been searching online but the problem I have is that all the cute styles I like look better if you have blond or highlighted hair. I will not ever color my hair so whatever it ends up being will have to look good in jet black with a few gray streaks. I intend to let my gray grow in since my husband thinks I will look like one of those hot older chicks. He is so full of it! haha!

I hope everyone has a great week :-)

Joining a playgroup

Today I received a random letter in the mail that was addressed from one of the elementary schools in our school district. I was not sure what it was about since neither of my girls have ever been to that school. It turned out to be an invitation to join a free playgroup once a week for William at a local church that happens to be located directly across from Briahnna's middle school. They offer story time, art & music, rhymes & finger play and free play. It is at the perfect time too, 10:30-11:30 which fits in before nap time. I am going to sign up and maybe it will help William be a bit more social. The great part is if it does not work out after a few times we had nothing to lose. I will let you all know how it works out. I look forward to meeting other parents with little ones Will's age in my area. I think it will be fun for the grown-ups as well.
If you a toddler aged child did you attend any playgroups? What was your experience with it?

Autumn randomness

Wow, I woke up to 49 degrees this morning and it was a welcomed feeling! I love this time of year and really like to wear sweaters and cooler weather attire. I am hoping it will last and not just be a tease and then we go back to highs in the 90's. That would be South Carolina weather for you! I am in the market for an extra large soup pot and if anyone can recommend a place I can get one for a reasonable price that would be great. I want one in stainless steel. I guess October is practically here and I will have to take William up to the pumpkin patch. I know he will really have with it this year since he is walking and very curious. Well, that's all I have for today. Vent day is tomorrow. Be sure to come back!

Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters "Snack Pack" Giveaway

**Contest Closed**
Winner is MomUnion. Thanks for participating!

I was contacted by MyBlogSpark to try out Nature Valley Granola Clusters. I was very happy to do it especially since we are big fans of Nature Valley products. If you are a nut lover and enjoy salty & sweet flavors with a crunchy texture then this product is for you! It's hard to pick a favorite with flavors like Nut Lovers, Roasted Almond, Roasted Cashew and Honey Roasted Peanut! Yum yum!! As a mom I love the fact that is a 100% natural snack.

These nut clusters came in at the perfect time since it is the middle of volleyball season. With practices, games, scrimmages and tournaments, these snacks are the perfect choice as a healthy pick-me-up for my daughters. I like the fact that the bag is resealable so they can take their own pouch in their favorite flavor to pack in their gym bag to take them through the week (or a couple days). This helps for those late evenings until they get home for dinner. This is also a great snack to send the hubby to keep in his desk to prevent the "I got hungry so I ran out and picked up something" excuse for eating something naughty. I can see myself packing these in the baby bag for outings and also for road trips. Another plus for me is that these products are from General Mills so we can save the Box Tops for Education.

MyBlogSpark has generously offered for one lucky Momfiles reader to win their own Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters "Snack Pack". This great prize includes: all four (4) varieties of the Granola Nut Clusters along with a sling backpack, stainless steel water bottle, flashlight and binoculars! Here's how you can enter to win:

Mandatory- Leave a comment telling us what you Nature Valley products you enjoy or would like to try. Comments that say "thank you" or "count me in" will be deleted. Want an additional entry? (You must complete the above method to qualify for extra entries)

Whos' the bigger kid?

Yesterday evening I went to the store (with the red circles) with Dwayne and William. We were out for specific items and I wanted to get what we needed and get out of that busy place. Dwayne decided that we needed to walk through the toy aisles, excluding the girly ones that had everything in shades of pink with spark;es. He wanted to see all things boy (man). He was in awe of all the army men, robots, car & trucks, superheroes, bug looking things... He was in toy heaven. We saw this fighter pilot headset that was cool (I admit it) and it was $40. Now y'all know my cheap husband was insisting it better be able to tell the future for that price hahaha! He was showing William all these things that he needs to be at least 4 or 5 to even play with. You should to see all the excitement in Dwayne's face. William, not so much. Dwayne tried to pick up at least 3 things that I had to convince him we did not need and you should have seen the pouty face! I learned something. Do not take Dwayne to stores that sell toys. Leave him HOME!

Shelly is de-funked

I wrote a post the other day about not feeling like myself and found the culprit. I was taking vitamins and they were messing with me in a big way. I thought that maybe I needed to take a multi-vitamin to give my body some of those important vitamins and minerals I might not be getting daily. I noticed that taking these vitamins my appetite increased to where I would eat ALL day long. Might I add, eating all the wrong things and indulging in a lot of sweets and junk food. I realized that this changed my mood and physical feelings. I decided to stop the vitamins and 24 hours later the normal Shelly came back to the world. I am so happy to be back. No more multi-vitamins for me! I will stick to calcium and vitamin C supplements. I'm baaack!!!

Downy® Simple Pleasures® review & giveaway

**Contest Closed**
Winners are: Stesha, Christy, and Autum22. Thanks for participating!!

I was lucky enough to receive a sample bottle of Downy® Simple Pleasures® Orchid Allure Liquid fabric softener to review. All I can say is WOW. I am already a very loyal Downy® user and a huge fan so this was a fun review. The scent is absolutely divine. I have to fight with my daughters to stop using it all up! They said their friends are always complimenting them on how good their practice shirts smell every day. Of course every Mom loves for their family's clothes to smell fresh and clean. I also like the fact that it is not colored, it's like a pale white so there is less fear of having fabric softener streaks or stains on your clothes.

I washed my sheets and blankets and used my liquid fabric softener in my trusty Downy Ball®. Dwayne keeps sniffing our sheets, it's funny! He really loves it and says it is actually more relaxing laying in bed with such a nice scent that really does last. I would totally recommend you to try this awesome product out and you can register for coupons and other offers here. I know this will be a staple in my laundry room and I can't wait to try some other fragrances as well.

Now here is the exciting part, I was offered a giveaway for 3 (three) Momfiles readers to win a year's supply of Downy® Simple Pleasures®!! I know you're excited! Here is how to enter:

I really don't know what my problem is these days. I have not been feeling like myself at all. It's as if I was taken outside of myself even though my body is still there. I don't know what it is. I have not even been blogging and that bothers me. I have lost focus it seems. I really need to get it back. I am sure most of you have the same issue from time to time. I am taking some vitamins and trying to set goals with time limits and see how that works out. I am one of those people that will put in the necessary time to meet deadlines. I am going to make up my own deadlines and stick to that. I am hoping to get my mojo back soon. Do you ever go through this kind of funk? What do you do to get yourself back?

William updates

Master William is now 18 months old and is FULL of energy... he's a firecracker. He wants to climb most anything and never sits still. It's hard to take him to places that require sitting down for more than 10 minutes. I am sure some of you will comment and tell me that it does not get any better for a long time. Yes, I have noticed this in boys.

I decided to make a list of all the latest strange and cute things the boy is doing these days.
  • We attend both of his sisters volleyball games frequently. If you dare try to clap or cheer he will start to cry as if you were beating him. I have to remember NOT to cheer. It's hard.
  • William is teething and instead of biting on a toy or washcloth he prefers his hands. Yuck
  • He does not put things in his mouth like normal toddlers. He never really did that even as a baby.
  • His new thing he loves to do is find random items and bring them to me. His latest finds: a staple, paperclip, half a toothpick, thumbtack, dog fur, an electric outlet "safety" cover and a variety of tiny pieces of string or plastic. All of these are choking hazards and thankfully this is where the not putting anything in his mouth comes in really well.
  • He loves to do his dancie dance when watching Yo Gabba Gabba (so do I)
  • When he does something wrong and gets yelled at he comes up to my face and kisses me repeatedly. On the mouth.
  • William thinks he is my husband, he really does.
  • He loves to plow. Plow??? Yes plow. He takes his chair and pushes it around the house like a plow. He is really serious too when he is plowing! It's the funniest thing! He even knows how to maneuver his plow around tight corners.

Well I hope everyone is caught up on what the little guy is up to these days!

Sesame Street Live! Elmo's Green Thumb

My family was offered 5 tickets to go see the show Sesame Street Live- Elmo's Green Thumb. Even though the girls are teenagers they were thrilled to get to see their little brother go to this show. I think all of us were living out our childhood dreams to be honest!

Part of the offer was a meet and greet with a couple of the actual characters. We were fortunate to meet the world famous Cookie Monster along with the adorable Zoey!! This was truly a rare treat and we had one of our amazing hosts take a family photo. Little William was a bit nervous but then again he is still pretty young.

Of course we had our big guy that was thrilled to bits to get a photo op with Cookie Monster! He pulled me aside and asked if I thought they would let him take a solo shot with him. Imagine my big cookie monster with the real-life one! In true Dwayne form he just had to throw up the peace sign since he was posing with a really cool celebrity.

As we walked into the Colonial Life Arena we took in the sights of this huge venue and had to walk down what felt like 200 steps to get to the floor seats. The big treat is that we got to sit in the third row away from the actual stage. I have never sat that close at any show so we really had the best view! When the show started we were told to get ready because it was going to get amped up really fast. That was no lie. The action was astonishing! The set, the lights, the music, singing, dancing and the overall mood was amazing!!

I took a moment to look at the crowd of moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grandparents, children and friends and it was so fun seeing all the smiling faces! I saw grown men singing the songs and swaying back and forth to the music. We were in awe of how awesome the choreography was. These characters had mad rhythm!!! It was neat how the some of the characters interacted with the crowd.

The show was so impressive and I loved how a lot of familiar songs that were made over into pre-school friendly songs. I was really shocked to see how much my teenage daughters were drawn into the show. They can't wait for the next one that comes to town!

I know I will be taking William to another Sesame Street Live production when he is a couple years older so that he can better understand what is going on. I certainly recommend this show for families when it comes to your city. I am not sure who loved it more...the adults or the little ones!!
*Special thanks goes out to Ms. Katrina Gilliam for making this fun family night out possible!

No Vent Day today

I am so sorry for all the Vent Day Wednesday followers that we will not have a video this week. The star of the show is under the weather and is taking some time out to chat with the infamous WBC's. He also has his swine flu towel (the stolen hotel variety) in hand to avoid spreading his germs. Feel free to watch an archived video of 'Ismail the Great' acting a fool! I hope everyone has a great day!!
