Tips to Ease Muscle and Back Pain Without Any Drugs

Muscular and back pain are common ailments that affect people of all ages and lifestyles. While medication can provide relief, it's not always the best solution. Fortunately, there are several effective ways to deal with pain without relying on medication. In this blog post, we will explore six detailed ways to deal with muscular and back pain without taking medication.

Stretching and Exercise

One of the most effective ways to deal with muscular and back pain is through stretching and exercise. When we experience pain, our first instinct is often to rest and avoid movement. However, in many cases, movement can actually help alleviate pain by improving blood flow and promoting the release of endorphins - natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body.

Stretching and exercise can help reduce muscle tension and increase flexibility, which can alleviate pain in the back and other muscles. Yoga, for example, is an excellent practice that combines stretching and gentle movement to alleviate pain and improve overall health. Additionally, targeted exercises that strengthen specific muscles can help prevent future pain.

Heat and Cold Therapy

Heat and cold therapy are simple yet effective methods for dealing with muscular and back pain. Heat therapy, such as using a hot water bottle or taking a warm bath, can help increase blood flow and relax muscles, reducing pain and stiffness. Cold therapy, such as using an ice pack or cold compress, can help reduce inflammation and numb pain.

When using heat or cold therapy, it's important to be cautious and avoid applying heat or cold directly to the skin. Always wrap a hot water bottle or ice pack in a towel or cloth before applying it to the affected area.

Use a TENS Unit

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a therapy that uses low-voltage electrical currents to help alleviate pain. TENS units like the ones from AUVON are often used to treat muscular pain and can be an effective alternative to medication. When applied to the affected area, the electrical impulses from the TENS unit stimulate the nerves and help reduce pain signals to the brain.

TENS therapy can also help increase blood flow and promote the release of endorphins - natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body. Additionally, TENS units are easy to use and can be used at home, making them a convenient option for people with chronic pain. Overall, the benefits of using a TENS unit for muscle pain include pain relief, improved blood flow, and a non-invasive, drug-free treatment option. It is super convenient for while you travel or are at work. Find out more at the AUVON store on Amazon.

Massage

Massage is a great way to reduce pain and promote relaxation. Massaging the affected area can help increase blood flow, loosen tight muscles, and reduce pain and stiffness. Additionally, massage can help reduce stress and promote overall wellness.

There are several types of massage that can be effective for muscular and back pain, including Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, and trigger point massage. It's important to find a qualified massage therapist who understands your specific condition and can tailor the massage to meet your needs.

Mind-Body Techniques

Mind-body techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing, can be effective ways to reduce pain and promote relaxation. These techniques can help reduce stress, which can exacerbate pain, and promote a sense of calm and wellbeing.

Meditation involves focusing your attention on your breath or a specific object, helping to quiet the mind and reduce stress. Deep breathing, also known as diaphragmatic breathing, involves breathing deeply and slowly, which can help reduce tension and promote relaxation.

Posture and Ergonomics

Poor posture and ergonomics can contribute to muscular and back pain, so it's important to pay attention to your posture and make changes if necessary. Sitting or standing for long periods can put strain on the back and other muscles, so it's important to take regular breaks and stretch throughout the day.

Additionally, it's important to ensure that your work environment is ergonomically designed to support good posture and reduce strain. This may involve adjusting your chair or desk height, using a standing desk, or using a footrest to support your feet.

In conclusion, there are several effective ways to deal with muscular and back pain without relying on medication. Stretching and exercise, heat and cold therapy, massage, mind-body techniques, and posture and ergonomics can all help reduce pain and promote overall wellness. If you're experiencing pain, it's important to talk to your healthcare provider to determine the best course of treatment for your specific needs.

What is Thyroid Disease and How to Treat It

Thyroid disease refers to a group of conditions that affect the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck that produces hormones that regulate metabolism and energy levels. There are several different types of thyroid disease, including:

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormones. This can cause symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, and dry skin. Hypothyroidism can be caused by autoimmune diseases, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, or by a lack of iodine in the diet.

Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. This can cause symptoms such as weight loss, rapid heartbeat, sweating, and nervousness. Hyperthyroidism can be caused by autoimmune diseases, such as Graves' disease, or by a condition known as toxic adenoma, in which a single nodule in the thyroid gland begins producing too much hormone.

Goiter

A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland, which can occur due to a variety of causes, including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, autoimmune diseases, and a lack of iodine in the diet.

Thyroid nodules

Thyroid nodules are small lumps that can develop in the thyroid gland. They can be benign or malignant, and often do not cause any symptoms. However, some thyroid nodules can produce too much thyroid hormone, causing hyperthyroidism.

Thyroid cancer

Thyroid cancer is a type of cancer that affects the thyroid gland. It is usually asymptomatic in the early stages and is often discovered when a lump is found in the neck during a routine physical examination. There are several different types of thyroid cancer, including papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic thyroid cancer.

If you have a thyroid condition, it's crucial to pay attention to your diet and consider incorporating certain foods and supplements to support your overall health and well-being. Here are some of the best foods and supplements for thyroid disease.

  1. Iodine-rich foods: Iodine is an essential mineral that plays a critical role in the production of thyroid hormones. The thyroid gland uses iodine to make the hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). Foods that are rich in iodine include seaweed, such as kelp and nori, dairy products, eggs, and iodized salt. It's important to consume adequate amounts of iodine to support thyroid function, but it's also important to avoid overconsumption, as too much iodine can be harmful to the thyroid gland.
  2. Selenium-rich foods: Selenium is a mineral that helps to protect the thyroid gland from oxidative stress and supports the production of thyroid hormones. Good sources of selenium include Brazil nuts, seafood, meats, poultry, and whole grains. A daily intake of 55 micrograms of selenium is recommended for adults.
  3. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that are important for overall health, including the health of the thyroid gland. Omega-3 fatty acids can help to reduce inflammation, which is important for those with autoimmune thyroid conditions, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Good sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines, as well as flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts.
  4. Vitamin-D rich foods: Vitamin D is important for maintaining healthy bones, but it's also essential for thyroid health. Studies have shown that low levels of vitamin D are associated with an increased risk of autoimmune thyroid diseases, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Good sources of vitamin D include fatty fish, such as salmon and mackerel, egg yolks, and mushrooms. It's also possible to get vitamin D from sun exposure, but it's important to get adequate sun protection to reduce the risk of skin cancer.
  5. Probiotic-rich foods: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help to support a healthy gut microbiome, which is important for overall health, including thyroid health. Probiotics have been shown to help reduce inflammation and improve gut health, which can have a positive impact on autoimmune thyroid conditions. Good sources of probiotics include fermented foods, such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut.

In addition to incorporating these thyroid-friendly foods into your diet, you may also want to consider taking certain supplements to support your overall health and well-being. Here are some of the best supplements for thyroid disease:

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is important for maintaining healthy nerve function and producing red blood cells. It's also essential for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. A daily intake of 2.4 micrograms of vitamin B12 is recommended for adults.

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 is a form of vitamin D that is more easily absorbed by the body. If you have a low level of vitamin D, it may be helpful to take a vitamin D3 supplement to help support your thyroid health.

Iron

Iron is important for the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the body's tissues, including the thyroid gland. If you have a

It's important to see a doctor if you are experiencing any symptoms that may be related to thyroid disease, such as fatigue, weight gain or loss, rapid heartbeat, or a lump in the neck. A doctor can perform a physical examination and perform tests, such as a blood test, to determine if you have a thyroid condition. With proper diagnosis and treatment, most people with thyroid disease are able to manage their symptoms and live healthy, active lives.

Funeral Planning Tips to Help You Make Smart Decisions

Death and funerals are something you do not like or want to talk about, but everyone knows eventually, the time will come, and they will have to face it. According to a report by the National Funeral Directors Association, only 36% of people have written or communicated their funeral wishes to their families and loved ones. Well, the reasons are too obvious to mention. But talking or communicating about it makes it easier to plan a funeral.

Losing someone you love is a big deal, and it takes time to understand the whole situation. In the midst of all this, planning a funeral becomes punishing. Well thanks to the internet, you can now just look up funeral services and planners around you. For example, if you live in Sydney, you can search for Sydney orthodox church funeral arrangements, go through the list of funeral planners in your neighborhood and book the ones that satisfy your requirements.

Planning a funeral needs you to make smart decisions. You don’t want to know about something you forgot to do in the middle of a funeral. So here are some tips that will save you all the worries and help you make all the right decisions to plan a funeral.

Learn what’s involved

To plan a funeral, you first need to know what happens at a funeral. The important things that need the most attention are preparing the body of the deceased, the ceremony, and then the interment. Is there a burial or cremation? Full funeral service at a funeral home or a small service near the grave? Viewing of the deceased or not? Burial in the ground or a tomb? Who and how many people are going to be there? Where are the ashes to be scattered? These are the most important questions you need the answers to for planning a funeral.

Find out the Average costs

Before just going to a shop and buying the things you think you need, go around other places and find out the average costs. Although there are a lot of things going on in your head, you still need to be attentive towards this and be smart with finances. Finding out the average costs might help you save a lot of money.

Shop around

Instead of buying the whole package the funeral home or the funeral planners introduce, you must go around nearby shops and buy things individually. Also, don’t buy more than what you need. It will be a waste of money and resources. Buy whatever you need but always keep a check on how much you need.

Make a List

Instead of trying to memorize a whole to-do list, just write it all down on a piece of paper and always keep it with you. It will save you the burden of remembering everything, and you can always keep adding things in there as soon as you understand the task. Keeping a to-do list helps you be specific about your tasks and deadlines. Missing a task and remembering it in the middle of the service will surely make you feel worse. So a written list is always the way to go.

These planning tips will ensure you plan the funeral in the best way possible without anything going the other way.

Summer Camp Essentials: Outdoor Health & Safety Checklist

Many kids are getting ready to head to camp this summer and enjoy the great outdoors – but coming down with a sunburn or a painful bug bite can easily put a damper on their day, and even cause long term illness.

MedStar Health shares the checklist below to help parents pack the essentials for any outdoor adventure:

Bug Spray

Your kids will most likely explore spaces occupied by creatures such as ants, spiders, flies, bees, mosquitoes and ticks, which can cause harmful rashes, or serious illness (such as Lyme disease). Make sure they apply bug spray on their exposed skin and clothes before venturing outdoors. Children should also have long pants and long sleeved, lightweight clothing options to wear on hikes to help decrease the risk of insect bites. It is also important to teach your children how to check for ticks each night.

Calamine Lotion

Bug bites are very common during the summer months.  When bites occur despite use of bug spray, calamine lotion can be applied to ease itchiness and irritation.  Be sure your child knows to notify staff if there are any signs of infection, such as oozing, pain, increasing redness of the  area affected, so they can be seen and treated for a possible infection.

Sunscreen

A sunburn can creep up on you, especially during a hike! Medical experts recommend the use of sunscreen lotion with an SPF of 30 or higher for any extended outdoor activity. It’s also important to reapply sunscreen every two hours - more frequently if you’ve been sweating or swimming.

Sunglasses

Sun exposure damages the eyes as well as the skin. The best way to protect your eyes is to wear sunglasses that provide 99-100% UVA and UVB protection. This will greatly reduce sun exposure that can lead to cataracts and other forms of eye damage.

Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen

Sunburn can be painful and uncomfortable so acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be used to help alleviate the pain or discomfort.  Sun poisoning can cause a range of symptoms including headache, fever, nausea and fatigue so young campers should know to reach out to an adult if they have these symptoms along with a significant sunburn, as they might need additional treatment.

First Aid Kit

Not only will a great first aid kit help you with injuries that commonly occur while out camping, but it can keep you prepared for survival situations that might arise while you are on your trip.

Refillable water bottle

Staying hydrated is extremely important, especially with increased outdoor activities over the summer.  Be sure your child knows to drink at least 3 bottles per day.  Help them get into the fun of having it with them all day by decorating it themselves with stickers and such.

5 Ways To Stay Motivated and Focused During Your Workout

Workouts can improve your health, provide entertainment and boost your mood. However, repetition is common in most exercise routines, so it can be difficult to stay focused. Additionally, life's distractions can slow down your pace and eventually discourage you. Follow these tips to maintain or increase your motivation.

1. Establish a Plan

As with several activities, a solid workout plan ensures you have a structure to follow and complete. For instance, if you plan on doing a full gym routine, note the machines you will use, the target body parts, the weights and the rest periods. Even if you are doing something as simple as running some laps, you might have to plan elements such as the duration, the lap quantity or your own speed. If you are having difficulty crafting a plan, work with a personal trainer.

2. Bring an Inspiring Playlist

Music can be a great source of concentration and motivation. Energetic music can lift your spirits and inspire you to go through exercise with minimal delays. Create a specialized playlist before your start, since changing music during the workout can do the opposite and distract you. Try to select something with a beat and inspiring lyrics, from hardcore rap and heavy metal to something more upbeat such as the music of Dan Avidan. Complement the earbuds with a hat to also keep your sight focused.

3. Exercise With a Partner

One fun way you can keep yourself accountable is by completing your routine with a partner. Self-discipline can be difficult, so having someone physically there can help you stay on task. Socializing with a friend, relative or significant other can also motivate you by itself. The only way this technique can work is if you bring in someone trustworthy who is just as passionate about fitness or even more so. If your partner does not take the task seriously, you could be influenced into abandoning the project.

4. Eat Before and After the Routine

Hunger and thirst could be factors that can drain your energy during your routine. Fuel yourself by eating food rich in carbohydrates before you exercise. Try to have a light meal or a snack between one to three hours before, as eating too much or working out too soon can leave you feeling sluggish. Ideal options include low-fat milk, whole-grain cereal and fruits. Try to eat something with carbohydrates and protein after exercise as well to help your muscles recover and reward yourself for your hard work.

5. Change Your Plan

Though a structure can help you focus during the workout, it also runs the risk of growing monotonous and discouraging. Avoid this feeling by switching up your plan after the first few days. Target different body parts so your body does not get used to the gym sessions. Change the location of a run or go in a different direction. Even minor changes encourage your mind to pay attention and acclimate to new situations.

The physical and mental exhaustion that results from exercise can make it difficult to maintain the effort and enjoy the positives. Use different techniques and resources to raise your stamina and motivation.

8 Things to Prepare For When Choosing a Surrogate

Deciding to start a family is not a decision that one makes overnight. If you are not able to conceive a child naturally, some other avenues are well worth exploring. Adoption and surrogacy are two ideal alternatives to falling pregnant naturally and are often just as fulfilling as having a baby more traditionally.

Choosing the ideal surrogate is not a simple process, and the more control you have over the external variables, the better. There are some vital aspects that you need to consider when you start your journey to finding your perfect surrogate or carrier.

Make a list of what you ideally want in a surrogate - the below eight points will give you something to consider and spend time thinking about. Having a baby is a mammoth decision, and it is not one to be made on a whim.

1. Age

When choosing a surrogate, you must first look at her age. According to the experts, the ideal childbearing age is around 30 years old. The best time to get pregnant is between 20 and 35 years old.
While it is not impossible to fall pregnant when older, the passing years often make it more challenging. Women who fall pregnant past the age of 35 risk their health and the health of the baby.
When consulting a surrogacy agency, be sure to let them know what your exact requirements are in terms of what you are looking for in a surrogate. A gestational surrogate will not use eggs of her own, so age is more of just a general indication of overall health and wellness.

2. Health

Finding a willing carrier is only half of the battle. You must look at her health history; that way you can do your best to ensure that your baby is healthy and that the delivery process is free from any issues or complications.

Ideally, a surrogate should have given birth before and currently live a healthy and stable life. Your surrogate should be sober and a non-smoker, with no history of drug or substance abuse. Remember to check with your surrogate to ensure that she is not on any chronic medications or ensure that her condition can be safely managed throughout her pregnancy - without putting your baby at risk.

3. Family Health

To be well prepared, you should take your surrogate’s family's health into account. Certain diseases and conditions are hereditary. Just because your surrogate has given birth in the past without issues, does not guarantee that the pregnancy and delivery of your baby will be equally as uncomplicated.

Take a look at the delivery history of your surrogate’s mother and grandmother - this will give you the best indication of what you can expect during the birth of your baby.

4. Understand Willingness

Surrogacy should ideally be a cut and dry process. You want a baby, and then you find a carrier willing to have your baby. Sounds simple, right? As much as this is how things should happen, sometimes the hormones and parental instincts kick in, and, the surrogate, unfortunately, changes her mind.

By using a California surrogacy agency, they will do their best to ensure that your surrogate remains willing during the entire pregnancy. Make sure that you clear up any concerns before insemination. That way no one is left in the dark, and everyone knows what to expect as the pregnancy progresses.

Your surrogate or carrier needs to demonstrate complete willingness during the entire process. Be sure to discuss these matters in-depth beforehand so that no one is left disappointed or surprised. She needs to make concessions and commit to all the appointments and check-ups.

That is the only way to keep an eye on your baby’s development and health throughout the pregnancy.

5.  Pregnancy History

When choosing the perfect surrogate, you need to check their pregnancy history. Make sure that they haven’t had any issues during past pregnancies. The smaller, more expected, things are normal – such as heartburn or fatigue. Be on the lookout for bigger issues like gestational diabetes or hypertension.
Those can be red flags for future pregnancies, especially if the carrier is older now.

6. BMI

Having a high BMI can significantly reduce the chances of falling pregnant. Ensure that your surrogate’s BMI falls between the ideal range of 18.5 and 25, which is the healthiest range for having an uncomplicated pregnancy.

A higher BMI puts her at risk of developing problems during her pregnancy. Don’t let her start a diet while pregnant, is not recommended. If your surrogate wants to watch her weight during pregnancy, she needs to consult an experienced dietician.

The BMI cannot be too low either; a lower BMI increases the risk of delivery and post-delivery complications such as preterm delivery.

7. Availability

When choosing a surrogate, be sure to check her and make sure that her schedule aligns with yours. If you want a winter baby, your surrogate needs to be available and willing to fall pregnant at the right time.

While you cannot guarantee that your surrogate will fall pregnant, you can increase her chances by ensuring that she lives in a calm and relaxing environment and takes her pregnancy supplements.

8. Involvement

Before going ahead with a pregnancy, make sure that both parties know what is expected of them, both during and after the pregnancy. Most surrogates are not involved in the baby’s life after the birth or breastfeeding, particularly ones who come from surrogacy agencies.

To End
Finding a surrogate should be an easy and fulfilling experience. Finding your perfect match is just like falling in love with someone – when it is the right person, you will know. For the duration of this journey with your surrogate, it is your responsibility to ensure that she has access to the best medical care available. If you’re ready to begin your journey to parenthood, contact a surrogacy agency today. Good luck on your journey; it will no doubt be an unforgettable one.

Can a Sports Watch Give You Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

A couple months ago, I started experiencing some weird sensations in the tip of my thumb. It initially occurred when I was harvesting okra from my garden. It almost felt like my finger was pricked by a splinter, and was a bit tingly. It felt like teeny tiny electric pulses concentrated in my fingertip. When I carefully examined my finger, I saw no signs of a splinter, but more of a pink spot. Then I thought to myself that perhaps it was an insect bite. I decided to watch it for a few days to see what would happen.

Day after day, it was the same feeling. It felt like a part of a splinter was left in my finger coupled with little electric pulses. This went on for 3 weeks. By that time, it started to skip around to different spots on that same finger. I was definitely able to rule out a splinter at that point because it's not possible for it to move to another spot. I did some online research and I saw mentions of nerve problems associated with diabetes as well as carpal tunnel syndrome. I was able to rule out the diabetes part, and the carpal tunnel had me confused since my wrist seemed fine.

After going into 7 or 8 weeks of this, the tingling sensation started to jump to a couple other fingers on the same hand. Things started getting uncomfortable at this point so I started to get desperate to get to the bottom of it. I knew I have a an upcoming appointment with my doctor, so I decided to wait out the week before I was going to see her. I did one last bit of research and wondered if a sports watch could cause CTS. After all, I do wear my sports watch during every waking hour and also to bed to track my sleep. The only time I ever really take it off is when I have to shower or enter water for any reason. There was no real evidence that this was the case, until I decided to try something. I took the watch off and within an hour, the electric sensation started to spread throughout my hand and wrist.

I was so shocked and realized that the watch was the culprit. I saw my doctor the next day and explained what had been going on. She confirmed that it sounded like a mild case of carpal tunnel, and suggested keeping the watch off for a while. She told me if I absolutely couldn't live without it to wear it on the opposite wrist and be sure to not wear it at night. I took her advice, and I now feel 100% relief. I am no longer having any uncomfortable sensations in my fingers or wrist.

If you wear a sports watch all the time, I highly recommend that you don't wear it as tight if you can help it. I have very tiny wrist, so in order for it to stay put, I pretty much have to wear it on the tightest slot. I left the watch off for a few days, and have started back wearing it on the opposite wrist being sure to leave a tiny gap so that this does not happen again. In the event this happens to you, I suggest taking Ibuprofen only as needed, keep your wrist elevated when you can, limit time on devices, and keep the area warm. Cold temperatures will set it off easily. It's all about resting your hand as much as possible.

Thank you so much for stopping by today!

Easy Ways To Take Care of Your Mental Well-Being

With the hustle and bustle of life, it's easy to put yourself and your needs on the backburner. However, when you ignore your needs, you'll find that you eventually burn out. When you face burnout, you might find that you are tired more than usual, have greater anxiety and are unmotivated to do even simple tasks.

When things get terrible, you might find that you have to see a doctor or use holistic learning materials to feel better. To avoid letting things get out of control, you need to take time for yourself. Here are some simple ways you can take care of yourself physically and emotionally.

Choose Good Foods

If you have a diet primarily made up of processed, fatty foods, you're probably not feeling the best. A poor diet harms how your body functions. You will likely find that you lack energy and have a hard time thinking clearly.

To avoid feeling crummy and not thinking clearly, you should eat whole foods. Your body needs the vitamins and minerals in fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. If you eat meat, choose lean, lower-fat options.

Work on a Hobby

When you do things you love, you will likely find that you're more relaxed and can think more clearly. Hobbies don't have to be anything overly expensive or creative. You could enjoy a nice warm bath and read a book. Work in the garden while listening to a podcast. If you love woodworking, then build some cabinets. You just want to make sure that you're doing something you enjoy. Your life shouldn't just be about other people and work. You matter, too.

Learn To Say No

Sometimes telling someone you don't want to do something can be challenging. You don't want to come off as rude and have them think poorly of you. However, your mental well-being should always be more important than someone's feelings about you. If you don't have the time to do something or it will be too much of a stretch to make it happen, just say no. Explain to the person that you wish you could help, but you just won't be able to work. Anyone who respects you and cares about you will understand.

Get Moving

Exercise is sometimes thought of as a wonder drug because even a little bit can make a huge difference. Find ways that you can move more each day. Perhaps go for walks in the evenings after dinner, or go to the gym before work. No matter what you do, you're going to see an improvement in your mood and thought processes.

5 Reasons You May Qualify For Special Enrollment

Each year, those who rely on Obama care plans for health insurance sign up during the open enrollment period with the ability to stick with or select a new plan in the upcoming year. There are also several reasons why a person may qualify to sign up or change their plan outside of open enrollment, including:

1. Change in Marital Status

If you got married or divorced outside of an open enrollment period, you will likely qualify to sign up for a new plan. Married individuals often sign on to a joint plan, which tends to be more economical than having two individual plans.

Those who get divorced are also able to sign onto a new plan as an individual or with children, instead of having to stay on a joint plan with a former spouse.

2. Moving Somewhere New

Moving is a stressful time for many, especially if you are headed to a new zip code. If you are moving to a new home within the same zip code, you aren't likely to qualify for a new health plan unless the move is accompanied by another qualifying event.

If you are moving to a new zip code, you will qualify for special enrollment and you can pick a new plan that covers doctors and other healthcare costs in your new area.

3. Fluctuations in Your Income

Although many people receive a yearly salary or hourly wage and can expect a steady income throughout the year, others earn their living from freelance or gig work. Others still may experience a change in income if they get a promotion at work or lose their jobs and all of which may be qualifying events for a special enrollment period.

Not all changes in income constitute a special enrollment period, but it's helpful to check with a healthcare specialist when you experience significant income fluctuations to see if you qualify.

4. Changes in Household Size

Those who welcome a new child into their household, whether through birth or adoption, have plenty to think about, including a change in their healthcare plans. Those who experience a death in the household, or a household member simply moves to another location, must also update their profile in the system and may qualify for the special enrollment period.

5. Altered Disability Status

If you or someone in your household has either become disabled or has recovered from injuries that kept them from working or everyday tasks, this change in disability status is likely to qualify you for a special enrollment period.

The plans available to you and your family may be completely different when there is a disability in the household, or the plans may be offered at a different price.

There are several life changes that may allow you to sign up for an Obamacare plan or change your current plan even outside of the open enrollment period. Any time you experience a significant life change, be sure to update that in the system to see if you need to pick a new plan.

Not Just for Wrinkles: 5 Uses of Botox That Might Surprise You

Botox has been around for many years. As a cosmetic drug, it was discovered by two Canadian doctors. They were treating patients with facial spasms when they realized the patient's fine lines and wrinkles were disappearing. This was in 1987. In 2002, the FDA approved the drug as a cosmetic aid.

Today, there are many different effective Botox treatments an individual can use to help regain their health, look better, and feel better in many areas of their life.

Here are the 5 uses of Botox that might surprise you:

1. Migraine and Headache Reducer

Many individuals suffer from debilitating migraines in which they can't function normally. These super headaches send the person to bed in a dark and quiet room, sometimes for hours if not days. Botulinum toxin or Botox has been shown to lessen the severity and duration of migraines in both men and women. In some cases, Botox has enabled a headache sufferer to have more pain-free days per month than ever before.  This is with yearly or every six months treatments, depending on the patient.

 2. Bladder Control

Three in 10 men, and four in 10 women suffer from some type of bladder control issue. The FDA approved Botox for a variety of bladder issues back in 2013. A small dose of this drug helps to relax the bladder, making the spasms less while it also helps to expand the bladder. This expansion helps to give more room to collect urine and that means fewer trips to the bathroom.

3. Strabismus Correction

Strabismus is a medical condition of the eyes. It is where one eye may look straight ahead, while the other seems to be focused to the left or right, also known as improper alignment of the eyes. Since the early 1980s, small Botox injections have been able to properly align a wandering eye. It is also safe in small children with this eye condition.

 4. Shoulder and Neck Pain

Botox can be helpful in reducing shoulder and neck pain in certain persons. Myofascial and posterior pain are both lessened with Botox injections spaced out for several months for a year or so. Chronic shoulder and neck pain can be a contributing factor in headaches and Botox treatments have also been shown to rid a person of these types of headaches.

5. Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis is a condition in which a person suffers from excessive sweating, even when the weather is not hot out. This is an amount of sweat that is like a dripping faucet or even a flowing river. It is a lot of sweat. Typical antiperspirants and deodorants do not work for this small group of individuals. Botox injections under the arm, and even in the hands and feet, can help to control the excessive sweating many people suffer with and helps to improve their quality of life.

These are just a few of the many uses of Botox injections that your doctor can prescribe to help you live a better, less painful life. Always listen to the recommendation of your trusted physician before deciding to get Botox injections.

4 Tips for Dealing With Your Emotions After a Traumatic Birth

Traumatic births come in all shapes and sizes, but they do all have one thing in common: They leave lingering feelings of guilt, sadness, and anxiety in their wake.

While having a baby should be a wonderful and happy time, it’s simply not always that. Physically, mentally, and emotionally, birth can be painful and deeply distressing. Things go wrong, and there’s often no way to make them right.

Even if you and your baby come out of the experience healthy — or at least on the mend — the experience can leave you in a terrible state. Here are some suggestions and tips for helping yourself deal with that pain and struggle.

1. Face the pain. Don’t hide from it.

There’s often a tendency among women who have experienced traumatic births to try to push the pain down and hide away from it. When it pops up in your mind, you may try to shake it away and not think about it.

Certainly, understanding how to handle memories of your traumatic birth is like walking a fine line. On one hand, it's true that you shouldn't linger on bad thoughts. In any situation where there is trauma, we can spin ourselves up so much that we actually make a simple problem much worse.

On the other hand, it's good to face the pain you have to struggle with. Everyone will experience pain and trauma during their lives, and accepting it for exactly what it is is actually part of moving on. Moreover, if you can learn to use a bad experience to improve your life moving forward, that's always the best possible outcome. We’ll discuss this more in tip #4.

2. Don’t listen to bad advice

Very often, traumatic birth experiences actually end with a healthy mom and a healthy baby. In a way, these are the hardest scenarios to deal with, however, because your friends and family won’t understand if you still feel the need to grieve and if you continue to struggle even after returning home from the hospital.

“Why would you be sad right now!? You have a healthy baby, and you’re fine! You're going to heal!"
Any woman in this situation knows that it’s simply not as easy as that. Whether you had to have an emergency C-section or your labor was prolonged for many days, this trauma can linger. If anyone tries to tell you that it's unfounded or that you should simply be grateful for what you have, don't feel you have to listen to them. Chances are, they’re speaking without experience and simply don’t understand.
Follow your own intuition because in almost all situations, it will be right. You deserve to devote attention to fixing the struggle you're having internally and to move toward a more positive state at your own pace.

3. Find out how best to comfort yourself

As you begin to grapple with the emotional and mental sides of recovery, remember that there are physical things you can do to calm your anxiety as well. Small acts of kindness toward yourself can make a huge difference to your mental state.

Here are some ideas:
  • Get some alone time. Ask for help from your partner, your family, or close friends. Let them watch your baby while you shop, get a manicure, or just go for a walk.
  • Take a relaxing CBD bath. Go to your local Denver dispensary and grab some bath CBD oils or salts. Dissolving these in your bath can have a positive anti-inflammatory effect and will help calm your body and spirit.
  • See professionals. If your back is bothering you, see a chiropractor. If you’re having pelvic floor problems, see your doctor. If you want to start working through your emotions, see a therapist. It’s worth it to seek professional help sooner rather than later.

4. Learn from your experience

Lastly, figure out how you can learn from the experience you had. When anything goes wrong in life, there are always lessons to learn, and the smartest people in the room will learn them. Everyone else will wallow in despair or pretend like it never happened.

So, what can you take away from the traumatic birth you experienced? If, for example, you feel that you were not assertive enough in the birthing room or did not plan enough for unlikely outcomes, maybe these are things you can plan to focus on more if you have another child. Perhaps you were surrounded by unsupportive people who didn’t understand your needs.

Even if you're done having children, there are lessons you can learn from a difficult birth. In the end, it is you who gets to decide your attitude and the next steps you will take to reclaim your life and your outlook as your own.

How To Ease Body Pain with the AUVON TENS Unit

Over 16 years ago, I was involved in two back-to-back auto accidents that left me in extreme pain. I had a lot of soft tissue damage in my neck and upper back that required me to go for physical therapy. I have always been against taking pain medication unless it was absolutely necessary. I was prescribed muscle relaxers and went to the chiropractor 3 times a week. The medication didn't really help, so I relied on physical therapy. It took almost a year of being treated to start feeling more like myself, but I learned later that the pain I suffered would hang around for the years ahead.

I was introduced to the TENS unit when I was being treated, and found it to really help relieve my pain. If you are not familiar with what a TENS unit is, it is a muscle stimulator that is used to relieve pain with no medications. It's as simple as apply the pads to the affected area, and adjusting the device to a level that is comfortable for you. Just sit back and feel the pain melt away.

I have been using the *AUVON brand TENS unit for a couple weeks now, and it is fantastic! The device comes complete with 1 x AUVON 4-Channel TENS & EMS Machine, 10pcs Electrode Pads (8pcs 2" x 2" Square Electrode Pads, 2pcs 2" x 4" Large Rectangle Pads), 4 x Lead Wires, 1 x USB cable, 1 x USB Charger, 1 x Pad Holder, 1 x Pouch, and 1 x User Manual.

The device is small and sleek. I love that it has a clear digital display so you can track the settings and time with ease. Here are the product details:
  • 4 Channel (A1, A2, B1, B2). Compared to dual channel TENS Unit, it allows you to apply up to 8 pads at the same time with the 4 outputs for much efficient pain relief. The independent A/B channel can work in different modes and different levels of intensities (e.g. you can select mode 7 with 3 intensity for your shoulders in channel A1 and A2, while in channel B1 and B2, this TENS machine can work as a back pain relief products in P3 with a much stronger intensity.
  • TENS + EMS Unit. AUVON TENS & EMS device combines 2 therapies in 1 device, in which TENS is a muscle stimulator for pain relief which provides safe, non-invasive, drug-free methods and has been used by doctors and physical therapists for years. EMS brings elicitation of muscle contraction using electrical impulses and activates the muscles to assist in the increase of strength and endurance as a rehab and strength training tool.
  • Large LCD & Multi-Modes. A 3.69" large LCD backlit screen is used for this labor pain simulator and muscle massager with enlarged icons and buttons for much easier reading and operating experience! You can set working time for your TENS unit muscle stimulator from 10 to 90 minutes, which will sufficiently satisfy your massaging needs! With a built-in powerful rechargeable lithium battery, never worry about the suddenly power off!
  • 10 Upgraded TENS Unit Pads. The Low impedance Solid Gel has been upgraded to the industry leading American adhesive, which can provide much better self-stick performance and easy clean up after 45 uses for a longer lifespan. Standard 2mm connector lead wires & electrodes are classic and commonly used in the medical area, which makes it easier for you to find compatible accessories.

I really like the variety of massaging levels that this little device has. It really is a life-saver when my neck pain flares up like it has recently. I feel good knowing that I can alleviate my pain in a drug-free way.  I also find that the massaging pads are very comfortable and do not pinch like some do. You can even purchase replacement pads affordably as needed.

The device charges quickly with the included USB charger, and holds the actual charge for a long time. This device is perfect for traveling or even taking into the office. So convenient!

This is a must-have if you suffer from neck and back pain. Get yours today from Amazon. There is even a $10 off coupon!

7 Ways to Care for Your Child’s Teeth

Your child’s gums and teeth need special attention and care. Establishing a good dental care routine in the early developmental years is vital because you’ll set up dental habits that your child will remember for life.

An Anchorage pediatric dentist recommends giving your child the best start to minimize the chances of serious dental issues down the road.

Why it’s Important to Take Care of Your Child’s Teeth

The most significant risk of improper dental care is tooth decay. This applies to baby teeth and adult teeth.

Although baby teeth don’t seem as important as adult teeth because they are going to fall out anyway, decaying baby teeth can cause many problems – in the short term and the long term.

Prematurely losing a baby tooth impedes the adult tooth from aligning correctly, puts the adult tooth at greater risk of infection and decay, and can even cause a speech impediment.

Here are seven ways you can help your child avoid tooth decay and all the other problems that come with it.

1. Care for Gums Early On

Believe it or not, your child’s dental care routine should start before your baby even has the first tooth. Make a habit of cleaning her gums after every meal.

You can use a damp cloth or soft-bristled baby toothbrush to rub gently along your baby’s gums.

2. Begin a Brushing and Flossing Routine

Continue to wipe your baby’s gums after every meal.  When teeth begin to appear, wait until they have grown in fully before starting to brush them.

Once your baby’s teeth have settled, use a soft-bristled baby toothbrush with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste to brush them twice a day.

When your baby gets a little older, you can begin to encourage them to hold the toothbrush by themselves. Teach them the correct way to hold it, how to brush their teeth, and how to spit out the toothpaste.

When your child’s teeth begin to touch (this usually happens between 2-6 years old), start flossing between them.

3. Avoid Pacifiers and Try to Deter Thumb-Sucking

Using pacifiers and thumb-sucking are habits that most young children develop, but if you let them go on for too long, they can affect the alignment of their teeth when they start to come in.

Dentists recommend putting a stop to these habits when your baby is three years old and advise against coating the pacifier with honey or any other sugary substance.

4. Schedule Your Baby’s First Dentist Appointment Between 6-12 Months

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends taking your child to the dentist at around six months old. However, babies get their baby teeth at different rates, so between 6 months and one year is perfectly fine.

Taking your child to the dentist early on will ensure that any dental issues are detected and treated as soon as possible. Starting dentist visits early will also help your child feel more comfortable with the process.

5. Limit Sugary Drinks and Treats

More than 40% of children will get cavities at some point in their childhood, but limiting the sugar in a child’s diet is the best thing a parent can do to prevent them.

Limit soda, fruit juice, chocolate, and candy as these sugary foods and drinks cause bacterial imbalances in the mouth, which encourages plaque buildup on teeth.

6. Catch Dental Issues Early

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advises taking your child to the dentist every six months so that cavities and other dental problems can be treated early. But there are also a few things you can watch out for at home.

Look out for tooth grinding and clamping at night, a lisp or other speech impediment, or excessive mouth breathing. All these signs may indicate a dental issue.

7. Make Trips to the Dentist Enjoyable

Many children feel anxious about going to the dentist, but there are a few ways you can help your child see it as an adventure.

You can prepare your child for their first trip by reading them dental-themed books and watching dental-themed kid’s shows – YouTube is an excellent resource for these.

Remain positive and try not to project your personal feelings about the dentist onto your child – your child will look for cues from you, so try to lead by example.

Choose a good pediatric dentist who is good with children and schedule an office tour so your child can familiarize themselves with the staff and practice. This will also let your child know what to expect.
