Questions for my parent friends

From time to time I come across things that are child related that I draw a blank on. I always resort to my blog parents to help me out. Here goes my first question. Have you experienced teeth grinding with your toddler? William has been doing that recently and it's not all the time but periodically throughout the day. It think he is mesmerized at the fact that he has teeth! Is there anything you can do about it? We usually take our hand and put it on his mouth and say "No! Don't do that" I'm not sure how well that's working. Any advice on this one?

My next one is that I suspect my kid has nasal allergies. He tends to sneeze a lot in the morning and evening hours. Do you have a toddler with allergies? If so how was it determined that they are in fact allergies? Does it require medication?

I know some of you wonder why I am asking you these questions and not the doctor. Well, his doctor thinks I need to fatten him up, others would swear he is two and quite big for his age. I just don't always trust everything the doc says. Thanks for taking the time to help me here!

Skin Free™ review and giveaway

I was contacted and offered to try out some products from the Skin Free™ company. I will admit I was a bit hesitant since I have done this before with another company with some negative results. When I hear something is natural and free of just about everything I get a little nervous. Those types of products are usually not the best. Well was I ever wrong! I received the four products shown in the photo. They are the Extra Moisturizing Soap & Shampoo Bar™, Super Moisture Butter Creme™, Whipped Tamanu Body Butter™ and the Niaouli Butter Stick™.

Now I had to decide which of the Ismail family members were going to try them so it ended up being Briahnna and myself. Briahnna has been using the Super Moisture Butter Creme™ to see if it would help relieve and repair some dry patches she developed on her face. Would you believe that it got rid of it in about 2 days time? I wanted to post photos but a 12 year old girl would NOT be having that! I tried the Niaouli Butter Stick™ and oh boy was I impressed! I have some rough feet (I admitted it) and this Butter Stick was just the antidote! It was not greasy and it keeps my feet moisturized for the entire day. I use it before I go to bed and when I get dressed for the day.

I also tried out the Whipped Tamanu Body Butter™. I am currently using it for massages. I keep it at my bedside for when the hubby is sweet enough to give his old lady a nice foot rub! It is so nice and once again, NOT greasy! I have used it all over and it is really good, leaves your skin baby soft. Now I have not yet used the Extra Moisturizing Soap & Shampoo Bar™ because I am saving it for when William runs out of baby wash. I think it might be good for his skin and hopefully less drying. He is showing signs of nasal allergies so I would think the lack of fragrance will be a plus for him. Overall I really think I will order the Niaouli Butter Stick™ and the Super Moisture Butter Creme™ on a regular basis. Now for the fun part, it's your turn...

One lucky reader can win $30 of Skin Free™ products of their choice. All you have to do is check out the Skin Free™ site and tell us what products you would like to try if you won the $30 gift certificate.

As seen on TV

Do you purchase any of the "As seen on TV" products? I recently saw something you connect to your garden hose that turns it into a power washer. I really want to get one. Dwayne might not let me since I have one of those Pedi-paws things that has been used once (by Dwayne)! I insisted that I had to have it and have yet to actually use it.

Do you have any of those items that you swore you would use and just had to have it and it collects dust? You know you do...admit it, I want to know!

Getting William to not wake up at night

Okay, if you read yesterday's post you would know that William was sick and waking up throughout the night. I knew I had to do something about this since this means Dwayne and I are not getting our sleep either. We do not do the pick up at night thing or the sleep in our bed thing so I had to think hard. I came up with something. As a matter of fact, it is what has worked all along. Strangely William can go 6-8 weeks sleeping perfectly through the night them Bam! He starts waking up a few times at night for about 2-3 days. I end up changing his bedding and voila, he goes back to sleeping through with no interruption. I have even found that moving his crib around to the opposite side of the room seems to do the trick. Your boy Dwayne aka "Ismail the Great" likes to call it Feng Shui. You let him tell the story he would say he made it all up on his own! I find it amazing how subtle changes can make a huge difference.

Do you have any tricks to getting your baby/toddler to sleep through the night? If so please share.

What kinda Wednesday is this?

So sorry, no Vent Day today because I am taking care of a sick little one. Believe me I had lots to vent about. When you live with Dwayne you could never run out of stuff to say! Today I am running off of about 2 hours of broken sleep. William has a head cold and has decided that he needs to whine all night long. He seems just fine in the day though. I am so lucky that Dwayne really takes the most care of him at night since I have the all-day shift. I have so many little things I want to write about but my brain is not really connecting with my fingers at the moment. Thank goodness for spell check! I hope everyone has a fabulous day! I think I am going to take the girls out so I can sneak by Starbucks for a quick pick-me-up.

Fundraising for school without the work

If you are a mom like me, you probably have participated in many fundraisers for school. I have tapered off how much I do over the years and have replaced it with Box Tops for Education. If you have been reading Momfiles long enough you would know that I have mentioned it quite a bit. We purchase tons of General Mills products each month and we make sure to save those little Box Tops so we can donate them to the kids' school. I subscribe to the Box Tops email list so I was recently offered a FREE collection box to store the Box Tops. Now I don't have to have them randomly floating around the kitchen in 50 different places including the infamous "junky drawer".
Now I can keep my collection box in my pantry so we all will know exactly where to keep our box tops!

Summer weekends are not always good

I am sure no matter what part of the United States and depending in what part of the world you live in you would agree that it is HOT HOT HOT! I really don't know what it is but it seems as if weekends are getting lazier and lazier and we sometimes get nothing done. Nothing.

This weekend the only accomplishments that were made was that Dwayne swapped out an old light switch in William's room that took all of 10 minutes. The hardest part of that was being sure when Dwayne shut off the power that he did not shut down the AC or kitchen appliances. He was successful. The only thing I really did was I purchased some weed eater trimmer string which was not actually used and is still in the bag on the kitchen counter.

Now one really bad part of the weekend was all the unnecessary snacking. As long as all of us are home we eat. ALL day long. Dwayne and I think we need to spend a part of the weekend away from each other in order to be more productive. Being together means being lazy. This much comfort can be a bad thing!

Does anyone find this happening in their household or are we just lazy slobs? Please tell us you are like this too!

Tide® Loads of Hope & a giveaway

If you have been involved in any major disaster that wiped out all of the everyday conveniences of life it would be devastating. We went through Hurricane Andrew back in August of 1992 and we felt those feelings of devastation and hopelessness. You never know how much clean laundry really means until you don't have it for a couple of weeks. Can you imagine that? This is what we went through. Well in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Tide launched a campaign called Loads of Hope to help provide clean clothes for the families affected by disaster.

The Tide Loads of Hope program features a truck outfitted with 32 energy-efficient washers and dryers that can do 300 wash and dry cycles a day (the average American family does 392 loads per year). The program has also expanded to include a fleet of vans that can pick up and drop off laundry to local laundromats. Relief workers, first responders, and individuals in areas affected are able to drop off their laundry to be washed, dried and folded by the Tide Loads of Hope team, free of charge. The truck and vans are implemented after consultation with disaster relief agencies and local emergency management officials when significant disasters occur and there is a widespread need for clean clothing. This is a truly unique way to help communities! If you purchase the special Tide® yellow capped bottles of detergent 10¢ will go toward helping families affected by disasters.

You can also purchase one of their very cool vintage tees for $20 and proceeds will go to help affected families. The tees are so comfortable and they feel like your favorite t-shirt you have had for years and you won't get rid of it because it's perfectly "worn in". I was lucky enough to get one from Tide and it is my new favorite tee!

Now it's your turn to get a chance to win one of your very own. We are giving away one t-shirt to 3 lucky readers in hopes of spreading the word on what Tide® Loads of Hope is doing to help families in need of clean laundry affected by a major disaster.

I went a little nuts

I know Dwayne is going to want to have a little chat with me about this post regarding his endorsement check. Sorry Dwayne, not this time. I went to the grocery store the other day and found one of my favorite beverage mixes on sale plus I had several coupons for them as well. I got ten containers all for FREE!!! All I do is add a pack to a little less water than it calls for and there you go, 60 jugs of low calorie drinks for the Summer! The Brita pitcher I won recently has come in very handy :) I think Dwayne should feel like I did some good for saving our family some money~!

This really scares us

The girls were going through some old games and toys the other day and they put everything in my upstairs office so we can store them in the empty closet. I still can't understand why they keep some of this stuff. They claim they are sentimental. I told them they were 12 & 14 and don't even play with those things. They finally admitted to me that they keep it for if they need it in another 10-15 years. huh?? They spelled it out for me...for if they have their own children. They said it makes no sense to spend money on things that are in great condition. Okay, I'll give them that.

Now when you are walking around the corner and you see this, it would scare you every time....

It's a Barbie styling head. They have had that thing for years and have even given her haircuts (really bad ones). It was laying on its side on the floor the other day and William walked in the room and looked down. All you heard was screams of sheer terror! He was frozen in his tracks and was completely petrified. You should have seen him. I felt sorry for him and tried to control myself from laughing because it was funny at the same time! We plan to put it away since the girls won't let her go. After a while Dwayne might charge the girls storage fees. You know how the man loves making money!

New Books, Low cost

We purchased William some new books over the weekend since shows so much interest in them over toys. I really don't know what it is but he really does not ever play with toys unless they belong to the dog. We found these fantastic board books that retailed around $10-$12 per book for a only a few dollars each. They are very brightly colored and larger than normal books for the birth-3 years of age. He just loves them.
This kid is so smart that he has a favorite book called Kitty Up! If you ask him where Kitty Up is he will find it underneath other books and say "up!" It's just the cutest thing. I love to read to William especially when I catch him glancing over at my face to watch my expressions. I get all into it to keep him interested. He will look at me at the exact same sentence every time I read a particular book.

The great part about his new books is that he won't be able to destroy them very easily like books with actual paper pages. Let's just say we have had a few casualties along the way! Don't let that innocent face fool ya!

William and his firetruck

We got William his first ride-on toy. I have actually been shopping around for one for a while now and it seems that these particular toys are hard to come by for boys (decently priced that is). I can find every princess, Dora, Barbie and all things girlie but finally found this one! Will really doesn't quite understand what he is supposed to do with it. He likes to push it all over the house!

He was being silly and leaning backwards and loving it! He is such a boy :)

Gee, hope Dwayne doesn't get mad that I am showing the brand and cutting into his endorsement money!!

Question

When does your baby officially become a toddler? I get some emails that refer to William's age as toddler and others as baby. Is it once they start to walk? I always thought it was 2 years of age. What do you think?
SHARE:

Feed your baby fat

I took little William for his 15 month check-up. He is developing perfectly on target and is doing all the things that are expected at this age. There was only one concern, his weight. It turns out that my once chubby baby dubbed "the Michelin baby" or "baby Sumo" is now in the 30th percentile for weight (22.9 lbs). I really do not know how percentiles work but I know it is on the low end. Maybe it is because he is in the 80th percentile for height. It's really funny that every person that sees William seems to think he is really big for his age but according to his doctor he is a bit on the thin side.

She even provided me with some literature on ways to pump up the calories by incorporating concentrated fats. These fats include butter, margarine, cheese, vegetable oil, mayonnaise, sour cream and cream cheese. I wish my doctor told me that I could have those things! Thankfully his pediatrician is very thorough and she assured me there is nothing to worry about and that he is just burning off calories from being so active. I probably should be glad that he is not on a restricted diet. So now William can eat anything he wants and then some! Lucky little fella!

Home for the Summer

The kids are officially out of school for the Summer. Even though we get just under 3 months it breezes right by. Both girls have activities scheduled throughout the next couple months as well as preparations for the new school year. They have a lot of Summer reading along with written assignments that go with each book.

I would like to think that I will not hear "Mom, I'm bored!". Seriously, if they pull that I will make them clean baseboards, cabinets, closets, and anything else that cure boredom. I'll take it old school if I have to!!

We purchased a membership to our State museum recently so that will be a good cool, indoor thing to do during the blistering months we will endure. It has already been in the 90's and I don't like it at all. The girls love to be outside and I only let them go before 10 am and after 7 pm. William still does not understand what "outside" is and something tells me it won't take long before he does! Happy Summer everyone :)

No Vent Day

We decided we would not have a vent day this week with all of the last week of school festivities going on. We are very focused on the girls wrapping up these final days and honestly, we have nothing to vent about! Even Dwayne has been behaving himself, well maybe a little bit more than usual. I'm sure he will do something stupid by next week. I am in 100% mom mode for the rest of the week but I will be posting some photos of what we have been up to. On another note, out garden veggies are growing like mad! We may have to have a produce swap with our neighbors. I hope everybody has a fantastic day :-)

I love my husband

I know I trash talk Dwayne as often as I can but I really think he is one amazing fella. He just always knows what to say when I need him to say it. He treats me like a queen not in a material way but in an emotional sense. I love that he supports me in every choice I make. I don't know what I would do without him. He's my bad boy for life :)
SHARE:

why do kids remind you all the time

Okay, it's like 90 something degrees and steaming hot. You know this. We all know this. Why do the kids have to complain and remind you like fifty eleven times that it's hot? Ah Summer, I so don't like it for the weather!

Get out and play!

I think radio has gone down tremendously over time playing really inappropriate things you would never want your kids to listen to. Now the other morning I heard something that was actually the best thing I could have heard in a long time. The radio personality was saying how we were finally going to see sunshine after so many weeks of off and on rain and clouds. He then goes on to suggest that it was the perfect weather for the kids to get out and play. He later corrects himself and says that in fact kids should get off their butts, put the remote down, the gaming controller down and go outside and play something. Kickball, soccer, jump rope, basketball, run, jog...anything to get active! He said that kids these days don't do that any more. It is so true. I am pretty glad that my girls (even at 12 & 14) still LOVE being outside playing volleyball, basketball and whatever else they feel like. You have to beg them to come in some evenings. I think children of today are really missing out on the good stuff. Sometimes as parents we have to get out and play with our children.

I'm back

I have not posted for a while now and with good reason. William is officially walking. I really did not talk about it much because honestly I was getting annoyed with being asked about it. He just wasn't ready. According to his pediatrician, I worry too much...walking at 14 months is perfectly normal she says. With having a new walker comes a big job. I can't take my eyes off of him for even a minute! He can't be trusted at all. I am literally running behind him for most of the day. Moments that I can just plop him in the playpen for about a half hour are the best! This kid's energy is non-stop and I am trying my hardest to keep up. I promise to post more often. I would have posted some photos of him walking but it's nearly impossible at this rate when it's just the two of us! I hope you all had a great extended weekend :)

Weekend Randomness

Well the weekend came and went so fast as always. It was rainy for the most part and I was either at home or out shopping for the kids. Little William has outgrown pretty much everything so I had to get some things for him. I have really learned that for every 5 articles of clothing you find for boys there are about 100 for girls! Then for some reason you pay more for boys' clothes. Strange. I was lucky enough to get a few things on clearance for about $3 so I will be happy with that. I had to go buy Chardonnay a semi-formal dress for her 8th grade dance. That took us weeks because nothing seemed to want to fit! She's pretty small so we had to find a dress that was going to be small enough. Ah, the size zero days...miss them dearly ;) I will be sure to snap photos when she is all glammed up in her dress and NO Dwayne is not chaperoning. ha ha!! She told me she would not mind if I went but her dad absolutely was not allowed to go! I told her I would pass on going and let her have her fun. They sure grow up fast. Next stop, High School. I hope you all have a great Monday!!

When William gets too quiet

Some days I have that quick moment that I have to leave William alone to do a simple task. When I hear silence I get a bit worried and wonder what he's doing that he's not supposed to. Is he playing with the dog's water bowl? Did he find his way into the bathroom or one of the bedrooms?? Is he trying to open the front door?
Lately I have been catching him doing this:
He "reads" to himself. How cute is that??

Been out of town

Wow, I can't believe it's been 4 days since I last posted! Our family went on a road trip up to Lynchburg, Virginia for the weekend and I am trying to get back into my normal routine. It's amazing how you can be gone for just a few days and you get totally out of whack! William did well overall with the exception of his wake-up time. He normally wakes up at 7:30 each morning and that has now turned into 6:30. I am hoping it is temporary because that one hour makes a HUGE difference! The girls went back to school today so I am sure they will be dragging most of the day. I sure am glad that I busted my butt to clean my house before we left. There is nothing like coming home from a road trip and everything is nice and neat. I looked around this morning and it looks like a small storm passed through *sighs* I guess it is that way with a big family. I hope all the moms out there had a spectacular Mother's day. I think the best part for me was the girls telling me that they think Mother's day should be everyday and not just once a year. I thought that was so sweet. Either they really are that sweet or they have mastered the art of manipulation! ha! I hope you all have a great Monday :)

Garden update

Our veggie garden has been planted now for about 2 weeks and I am so impressed with the progress so far. I think everything has gotten about 8-10 times larger than they started out. I wanted so badly to fertilize everything but believe it or not Dwayne won't let me. He tells me that it goes against the whole idea of an organic garden and of course he brings up the fact that way back in the day there was no such thing as fertilizer. Fine, I will let him have it his way. I am hoping that the organic compost will prove to be a natural source of fertilizer and will provide a reasonable crop to harvest. I guess time will tell. I am so impressed with how serious Dwayne is about getting greener! Speaking of greener, look for an upcoming "green giveaway" later this week.
Question: If you planted a food garden, did you use fertilizer?

Keep out!

Today I went out to buy a couple of these:
I had to put a stop to this sneaky boy getting into anything and everything there is. I am not going to kid myself and think this will solve his curiosity. Maybe just keep him a bit more contained.
Look at him wondering what this thing is.

He just had to give it a taste test. Needless to say he made the barf face!

Then he decided to cry when he realized he was being kept out of trouble. Don't go feeling sorry for William especially you Tanyetta.

Oh and last thing, he called me dad the whole time. LOL!

My kid calls me daddy

I really don't why this is but William calls me daddy. Seriously, stop laughing. I call him over to me and he responds by calling me daddy. When I tell him my name mommy he responds with "daddy" and smiles at me (tongue sticking out and all). We go back and forth with me saying mommy and he says daddy. I give up. I think Dwayne might have brainwashed him or something.

Has this ever happened to you?

It's the weekend baby!

I can't believe it's Friday already. The week flew by comparing to last week. I thought I would post a few William photos to show you what he has been up to.
He's always turning the TV off. Is this his way of going green??
I am going to have to come up with some sort of a barricade even though he finds a way to get through.
Gotta have his Dora and Diego!
Look at that face! He is always bothering poor little Milo. Will prefers to play with the dog's toys over his own. Maybe we should buy him his own dog toys? Maybe not.
The little guy can be caught at any time sucking on his tongue. I guess this is him getting back at me for when I took the paci away when he was 3 months old.
William is not walking as yet but he sure is busy all the time! He is learning his alphabet and numbers and LOVES to read. His favorite animal is the lion. If you ask him what sound the lion makes he will roar for you! Now trying to capture that on video is not working out so well. He is now going through this phase that he just does not care for the camera unless he gets to play with it. Ah, little boys....
Have an awesome weekend!
