Give The Gift Of Spices To The Foodie In Your Life #HolidayGiftGuide

Do you have a foodie coworker, friend or family member you are shopping for this holiday season? If you are short on ideas of what to give them, I'd like to suggest a monthly subscription box of gourmet spices from RawSpiceBar. What makes RawSpiceBar's spices so unique? They offer a different theme each month of  3 premium ground spices and blends that are specific to certain countries/regions, and include recipes as well as some background on where the spices are from.

I received November’s Ethiopian Spice Box to test out. The foodie in me was super excited to try it since I love experimenting with different types of ethnic dishes. This Spice Box had Pumpkin Pie Spice, Berbere and Ethiopian Mitmita. First, I will say that pumpkin spice was nothing new until I took a whiff of this one. It was so deep and earthy and was the perfect addition to my candied yams at Thanksgiving dinner. My family commented that there was something different about the yams, but it was a good different.

The Berbere and Mitmita were completely new to me. I opened each packet to smell the aroma and was WOWED. I immediately was hit with what I could tell was a peppery, spicy blend along with a hint of cardamom. I decided to use both spices in a stewed chicken dish. I'm very glad that I decided not to go too heavy with either spice blend because they were crazy hot! Thankfully we all love spicy, so it was not a problem. I loved the unique flavors. It has me excited to see what's in December's box. You know what the best part is? It costs only $6 a month to experience new flavors and have access to recipes for dishes you may have never thought to make. This makes the perfect foodie gift for the holidays!
You really can see and taste the quality in each flavor-packed packet. I was viewing some of the past boxes this year and want them all! They've had Persian, Japanese, Jamaican, Punjabi and more. You have to check out RawSpiceBar on their website as well as on Facebook and Twitter.
I received products samples in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are 100% my own as always.

When Life Gives You Lemons ... Keep Your Head to the Future (Guest post)

2013 is a year that I’ll mark down as one with plenty of ups and downs.

I had the wonderful experience of moving into a new apartment with my girlfriend, becoming a proud owner of a husky puppy, and I did rather well in my work.

Though …

The last few months have been somewhat rough. I lost two of my grandparents and my girlfriend lost one of hers. There were a few rocky parts about the “what’s next” in the relationship. The holidays certainly added to the overall pressure.

But in the end, I am grateful for what I have experienced. It really helps to shine a light on the important things in life. It reminds you of the old saying of “when life gives you lemons … make lemonade” but, for me, it became a thought of “look to the future”.

The things that became Increasingly Important

I can’t speak for all of us, but when you’re faced with these types of ups and downs, you can’t help but think of the big picture.

The more I age, the more it has become increasingly important (and apparent) that I figure out what’s in store for my future.

These are items like:
•  If I had a child how would I pay for their college?
•  Why do I get wrapped up in the “rat race”?
•  How am I going to plan for my retirement?

I know these are some of the very same thoughts you have and I believe I might be able to share a bit of wisdom about these topics.

1. Keeping Healthy

I like the concept of “your body is your temple” because it helps you understand that you have just one and what you put into it really does matter.

It doesn't matter if you let yourself go, if you’re already lean, or if you’re dealing with some kind of setback. What matters is that you take control of your health and the best way, on the fundamental level, is through proper food.

Don’t continually wait for the New Year to make a commitment to better living. Start learning healthier options for your cooking. Start getting out there and exercising (even just 15 minutes a day). Get the whole family involved – get them excited.

You’ll add years to your life if you make the commitment to be healthy – and you’ll certainly want to see the same for your family.

2. Finding Acknowledgment in a Career

Being proud of your work and gaining acknowledgement of your commitment is very rewarding on a psychological level.

I noticed this with my grandparents. They were from another time so they were the type to put in the hard hours even when the task was far out of their league. They went through times far worse than mine and came out very successful.
I think you should do the same.

Your career doesn't need to suck away the time you can spend with the family. On the contrary, you should strive to increase proficiency in work rather than throwing more time at it. Not only will you have that extra time to spend with the family but you’ll set in motion what’s needed (savings and investments) to ensure your child has the opportunity for a higher education.

3. Knowing what’s at the end

We all meet our end, which is a scary thought in and of itself, but even scarier when you think about what you leave behind to your children.
Bills? Maybe. Inheritance? Hopefully.

It doesn't matter how you start – just the fact that you do start planning for your retirement. This can involve any number of savings plans. Schwab recommends investing in an IRA account, but that's just one of multiple options.

You won’t always have the same energy or skill set to compete in your career. You will eventually retire. You also want to plan for the unexpected (those lemons).

Get real about your life and how you impact others. Save anything (even a little) for the future. Give up chasing material possessions that holds you back from enjoying the bigger picture. Solidify the well-being of your family (and all those after) by committing to planning for the end.

10 Trends that need to be left in 2013

There are so many things that have been abused in 2013 that I really think should stay in 2013.

  1. Wearing leggings as pants. I won't go into details with this one. I'm over it.
  2. Inserting the word "really" too many times in conversation. It is the most overused word of 2013. PLEASE stop it.
  3. Women and teenage girls and their 1,238,749,739 selfies All. Day. Long. We know what you look like. Obviously you love yourself. Narcissistic much?
  4. The mustache trend started a few years ago and I would love to see it go away for good.
  5. Over-sharing on social media. When you have to post the events of your life from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep, you have a problem!
  6. Duck lips. I know it's nothing new.
  7. Re-posting videos that exploit children. I don't need to see any toddler in a diaper nasty dancing. It's not cute!
  8. The phrase "turn up" can die.
  9. Bitstrips. It was so cute for the first week. Very cute. Then all the people of the world jumped on the Bitstrips bandwagon.
  10. Instagram followers that sell "skinny wraps". No thank you. *block*
Please add anything you want to see gone before we head into 2014.

Throw a party, New York Style #thethingtobring

The holiday season is officially here and this means lots of gatherings and parties! I received a fabulous hostess set from New York Style snacks to get me ready for entertaining this holiday season. Did you know they have a brand new look? I think it is so festive and fun! They also came out with some delicious varieties in their Sweet Swirls line; Cinnabon and Chocolate. They are incredibly delicious! They have the perfect balance of crunch, crispiness and sweetness. I do like that they are not too sweet.
Let's not get started on how much I love the Pita Chips. I may or may not have eaten an entire bag by myself in under 24 hours. I'll never tell!

New York Style snacks are so versatile since you can eat them as is or create your own recipes with virtually any variety. I had to bring something to my son's class family feast last week and decided to make something with some NY Style snacks. I went with the Garlic Parmesan Panetini and the Roasted Garlic Bagel Crisps. I came up with a very simple idea that looked quite festive. A simple smear of plain cream cheese on each crisp, topped off with a super thin slice of English cucumber and a few dried cranberries. It was a big hit! You got the salty and savory garlic and cheese flavor from the base and the sweet and creamy textures from the toppings. It was a perfect combination!
The parents at the family feast loved this simple appetizer and want to make them for their next gathering. The possibilities for toppings or dips are endless! If you take a peek on the New York Style website, you can find a lot of recipe ideas to try.

Be sure to connect with New York Style on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest and Instagram for product updates, recipes and more! Happy Entertaining!

I'm back!!

I just wanted to post a quick update to explain my absence. Our family went away on a 4-day vacation to Orlando, Florida! I have tons of photos and stories to post but I am trying to get back into the groove of the everyday since we got in at the wee hours of the night. I did not do any Facebooking, blogging or Tweeting while we were gone and I actually survived!! It was a much needed break and I can't wait to share some details. Now I'm off to unpack, do laundry and get my house cleaned up for the New Year. I promise to catch up on blog reading this weekend. I wish everyone a happy and safe New Year's weekend! :-)

Momfiles year in review 2009

I decided to write this post in list form and there is no order, just random:
  • We have made so many amazing friends along with getting to know the existing ones better that we met through the blog world. I love my blog pals :)
  • We completed a full year of Vent Day Wednesday and we are still debating if we will continue in 2010. We may consider doing a segment once or twice a month.
  • We have gained new followers and new loyal readers.
  • We have another year documented through the blog of the kids' accomplishments and other fun stuff.
  • We are so happy that more of the people we know personally have been enjoying their daily dose of Momfiles.
  • I have made so many new friends through Facebook that came from the blog.
  • We have been pretty happy with all of our sponsors and PR peeps that have been so generous.
  • Our family has grown and learned whole lot this year.
  • 2009 has been the best year ever for us and we are excited about what's to come in 2010.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! We wish you all good health and happiness :)

Putting it all away

I started late last night taking all the ornament off the tree. It was supposed to be just that. Instead the lights made their way off and then eventually the tree itself completely disappeared, tucked away in enormous storage bins. All signs of Christmas have vanished. I am one of those people that just don't like keeping seasonal things up past the time. We really like getting the house cleaned up and organized for the New Year. Dwayne has gotten our bill book made for 2010 and I got a new computer and so we have no excuse to have things get out of control. I even bought a new coupon organizer to help save the family some money. If I don't have a coupon or it is not on sale I generally won't purchase that item. So now that I have completely switched subjects it is time for me to go! I will be back tomorrow :)
