I want my toddler to stop taking naps

Sounds crazy doesn't it? I really want William to stop taking a nap each day. This kid tends to take his nap between about 2:00-3:15 (during afternoon school pick-up). Don't get me wrong, it is probably the most peaceful part of the day but the problem begins at night. The boy thinks that 10:30 and 11:00 are acceptable bedtimes. He in turn stays down late the next morning and repeats the process. I would much prefer that he wakes up at the crack (I love getting up early) and goes to bed by 8 or 9. He really does not act any differently without the nap. I guess I will just have to see how things go over the summer since the girls will be around more. He changes when others are home in the daytime so I guess time will tell!

Question: At what age did your child stop taking afternoon naps?

  1. Gabe was probably about 6 months older than William is now when he quit taking naps. I forced the issue a bit because he was staying up so late at night. I missed naps horribly but the trade off was worth it.

  2. I know what you mean! Chase's nap is at such an inconvenient time (12:30-3 pm), so we basically end up breaking our day into "the morning half" and "after his nap." Its the only time we can get things done, and both time-frames are short.

However, unlike William, Chase is a monster without his afternoon nap. He is so cranky and irritable, and the tantrums are doubled.

Have you tried getting William up early with you? Eventually he will start getting tired earlier. Chase is up at 6:30 am daily (including weekends - bummer!) since we have to go to work/daycare. But, as a result, his little body is plum wore out by 7 pm. So it's good (in that after 7 pm is MY time), but a little annoying (cuz i dont EVER get to sleep in on the weekends)

  3. Stop the naps. I still don't have a child, but based from what I saw with my younger cousins, this is what my aunts are imposing also. I don't really think that it's healthy for a kid to stay up so late at night.

  4. I probably shouldn't offer comment on this subject but I always enjoyed when my daughters took naps. Probably as much as they did.

  5. I believe my son was about 3½ when he stopped taking naps. I remember dreading that because it was the most peaceful time of the day lol....ooops did I just say that lol!

  6. I wish Jay would stop taking naps too, but I don't know if I could deal with him all day long. If he didn't nap, he would have a better chance at wearing out earlier...sigh.

  7. My guy goes down about 3:30 p.m. each day, for almost two hours. That means he's up at night, and we're having him in our bed so we can keep him in our room and keep an eye on him. Like you, I'm hoping the older kids being home in the summer will change the pattern. G/L to you, and to me! :)
