How to get rid of a headache naturally

Yesterday I had a terrible headache that would not go away. I woke up with it and it persisted all day long. When the hubby got home from work, he automatically knew I was in pain. It was the kind of pain that makes you stretch your face with your fingertips in odd ways and press your forehead to try to find some relief. He insisted I needed to rest my eyes for a few minutes. It was already 6:30 in the evening so taking a nap was not an option for me. I did lay down for a minute though. Dwayne came over to me and grabbed my foot. He gently pressed his thumb into the bottom of my foot near the arch. No lie, I started feeling my headache breaking up instantly. He then started to apply pressure to different parts of my feet and within 2 minutes my headache was completely gone. It's amazing how effective this method was. Just figured I would share this with you guys.

Have you ever tried this method to rid yourself of a headache? Did it work for you?

  1. Pressure points. I've heard of this. Will have to try it the next time I have a headache!

  2. Yes, I'd heard of this while in the military but I've never tried out of belief that it doesn't suffice. Now that your husband proved it does, I will be sure to keep in mind next time someone close to me experiences headaches.

    Good stuff.

  3. Oh wow, Ive never heard of that technique. I usually just sleep it off, as I find that usually my headaches are due to a combination of stress and being over-tired.

  4. For some people, including me, taking a quick dose of caffeine can stop a migraine, such as a single or double shot of espresso (depending on your tolerance) or an Excedrin Migraine. Unfortunately caffeine withdrawal can also be a migraine trigger, so you need to avoid it the rest of the time and only use it to treat migraines.

Caffeine isn't a healthy alternative, but it can be a very effective, inexpensive one for some people. Healthier options include feverfew, essential oil blends, and homeopathic remedies, all of which can be found at any health food store. I recommend going to talk to someone who works there and then just using the trial and error method to see what works for you.

My best recommendations for avoiding migraines, from experience, is to have a very consistent sleep schedule (same time every night), drink A LOT of water (going to the bathroom a lot is still way better than a migraine), and totally avoid alcohol and spicy foods like peppers, garlic, and raw onions. Getting enough exercise and using relaxation techniques like mediation, visualization, and self-hypnosis (guided CDs are great ) can be very helpful too. Best of luck to you.
