Homeschool or public school?

I am still trying to decide what to do with William. There is a HUGE part of me that wants to home school him. Then there is a tiny part of me that wants to send him to school. If I do send him to school then I would more than likely need to put him in preschool to get him used to a classroom setting. Oh what to do, what to do... This is one of those things I think about most of the day. I just don't know what to do!

  1. Unsolicited advice, homeschool him until 5 and then send him to kindergarten. Ok, don't listen to me! LOL

  2. Did you homeschool the girls when they were younger? Whatever you did with them sure seems to be working well to say the least!!!

  3. Good advice from Sean! :-)

Also, do you frequently have play dates with William's peers? If you have family/girlfriends with kids around his age, whom he sees regularly, I would say go ahead and homeschool. However, if his primary interaction with young people is his two older sisters, I might say pre-school then school. The socialization piece is just so invaluable.

BUT, foremost, I say go with your heart and with your gut instinct, because I find that mom always tends to know best with these things. ;-)

  4. The socialization issue is such a misconception. School does not teach this.... It has been proven time and time again that homeschooled kids are no less social than traditionally schooled kids. However, if you choose to homeschool, I do suggest getting involved in a local homeschooling group so that he does have time with other kids his age. Most homeschooled kids do not spend all day in the house alone with their parents. There is definitely a right way to homeschool (meaning that being active and out and about are the best ways to do so).

Here is a really good article on Preschool/homeschooling. The author questions the notion that parents don't provide the essential tools for their kids at this stage: http://www.homeschoolnewslink.com/blog/?p=721

  5. You can also test out a preschool. Many have half days of just a few hours 2/3 times a week. Be guided by how you feel and what your son shows you. My son loves being social so I followed his lead and put him in a daycare. But trust I held off as long as I could :)
