Odd question...

I was wondering how people from different states, cultures and ethnic backgrounds felt about this:
Do you call your aunt and uncles "Aunt Janet" or "Uncle Bob" or do you call them by their first name? I grew up in a very strict and conservative Guyanese home and my parents were sticklers for respecting your elders. We NEVER called any aunt or uncle by their first name. As a matter of fact, if you were a cousin that was older we had to refer to that person as 'cousin so and so'. When I met Dwayne he introduced his aunt and uncle to me by first names. I thought maybe just because it was an introduction that was why he did that. Then when I kept hearing him call them by first names I freaked out! It turns out I have met many people along the way that do that. I have nothing against anyone that does that, but was wondering what your thoughts are about this subject.

Do you call your aunts or uncles by their first name?
Do you think it is wrong if you don't?

  1. When I turned 18, I began calling everyone by their first names.

My kids call adults "miss shelly or auntie shelly"
    I don't think it's right or wrong.

    Great post.

  2. I call my aunts and uncles (my parents siblings) by their first names. When I greet them I put "aunt" in front of their names out of respect, but in general, I don't. I always refer to my parents aunts and uncles as "uncle whoever". Adults in general (not related) were given formal titles like "Miss So and so".

My nieces and nephews call me by my first name - same with my cousins who are as young as my nieces and nephews. I don't want them to call me "Aunt tina" or "Cousin tina". But there are some who are huge sticklers for giving formal "Aunt" or "Uncle" or "Cousin" to those relatives who are significantly older. I think it's just downright weird.

To wrap up, I don't think it's disrespectful or wrong to leave out the title. Their behavior and words towards me shows their respect, not a title. But that's just me.

  4. I have my picks and chooses of who to call what, but we were never required to, or reprimanded because we didn't. My son calls his them auntie or uncle and then their first name.

  5. I grew up the same way. To me it's a sign of respect. I wouldn't have it any other way when it comes to my children speaking to their elders. They refer to my friends as Miss or Mr. so and so.
My hubby feels the same way too. Speak your mind, I love it!

  8. Hmm I think I started calling my aunts and uncles by their first names when I hit my teens.

  9. Growing up I always used the title, but as an adult it tends to come and goes.

However, I do refer to the older aunts and uncles as such.

  10. Hell no! I use aunts and uncles followed by their first name..out of respect. I dont think it's wrong but it's uncomfortable for me if I dont.
Furthermore, my mom would probably slap me in the head for being rude if I dont.
