Pet Guide: Is Pit Bull A Good Family Dog Breed?

If you are thinking about finally adding a dog to your family, you will definitely have a lot of research to do. There are so many different breeds out there and a lot of those are perfect family dogs. Yet, you have your eyes set on Pit Bulls and you would really like to have one, but you aren’t sure whether it would be the perfect choice for a family.

That, in part, depends on you and your habits: https://pethelpful.com/dogs/Is-a-Pit-Bull-Right-For-Me-and-My-Family
I can definitely understand why you might be hesitant to get this specific breed for your family. Pit Bulls have a long history of being known as strong, aggressive and dominant canines. Does it have to be that way, though? Do you really have to give up your dream of having this breed because it might not get along well with your family?

Those are all some legitimate questions to ask. In case you have done any research on this topic whatsoever, you have probably come across some contradicting opinions. Some say that these canines should come nowhere near kids, while others claim that their Pit Bulls were or are the perfect, loving creatures that are extremely protective when children are in question.

All of that might have confused you even more. You would love to be able to finally get to the bottom of this and understand whether a Pit Bull could be the right choice for you or not. Well, in order to actually get to the bottom of it, you will need to get some additional tips on this specific breed as well as some others, so that you can do some comparisons and figure out the truth.

The most important thing to do, however, is to learn more about the actual temperament of this canine and then decide whether that kind of a temperament would be something you could handle. So, let us take a look at their temperament and then try to answer the question of whether this breed could be right for your family or not. Here we go.

Temperament
One of the most common misconceptions about these dogs is that they are inherently extremely aggressive towards people, as well as towards other animals. Recent studies, however, show that this is actually far from the truth. Quite on the contrary, Pitties have ranked among the most affectionate and the least aggressive canines. What is it, though, that has contributed to such discrepancies in opinions?

Let me try and explain that. Pit Bulls definitely look tough and have all the muscles necessary in order to overpower other animals, as well as humans. This is probably why a lot of people have seen the fighting potential in them and actually trained them to be aggressive and hostile. We can’t deny the fact that these canines are strong and powerful, but it turns out that they are aggressive only if taught to be that way.

To put things even more clearly, the way these dogs will behave in your home and around other people will depend only on you. The fact that their aggression potential has been recognized and abused is exactly what makes Pit Bulls widely misunderstood by a large amount of people and I believe it’s time to put a stop to that. In short, the temperance passing rate of this strong and powerful breed is extremely high and, ultimately, they will grow into what you want them to be. So, if you train them to be a loving and affectionate dog, that’s what you will get and vice versa.

Keep in mind, though, that this breed is extremely active and that you will need to match their activity level if you want them to be the perfect dogs. Additionally, you will have to train them properly. That can be tricky, since they ought to be stubborn, meaning that you’ll need to be patient.

The Verdict
The bottom line is that Pit Bulls can be the perfect family dog as long as you take the time to train them, socialize them and raise them the right way. If you don’t have the time or the will to do that, then you should definitely choose a different breed. After all, you don’t want a strong, powerful, misbehaved dog.

What You Should Know Before Adopting a German Shepherd

German Shepherds are one of the most popular dogs you can own. Known for their loyalty, intelligence and ability to protect, they make an excellent pet. If you've never owned a German Shepherd and are interested in making one part of the family, here are four facts you should know before adopting.

American and German Breeds Differ

One of the most notable differences between the European German Shepherd and the American, is appearance. German Shepherd puppies imported from Germany grow into adults with a straight body, whereas Americans have a more sloped line. Bred as work dogs, shepherds from Germany are often better guard dogs than their American counterparts. However, both are highly protective of their family.

Training Is a Must

In order for a German Shepherd to successfully integrate into your family, he needs to be trained. German Shepherds are very easy to teach, but unless you've got lots of time to spare, they'll benefit from going to obedience school. Proper discipline ensures your dog will coexist with other pets and understand how to act around different people.

"Jobs" Make Them Happy

Even after they've been trained, German Shepherds can become bored if they're not mentally stimulated. They enjoy having "jobs" and the more tricks you can teach them, the happier they'll be. They also love hide-and-seek type games.

They Shed Like Crazy

German Shepherds shed a lot, sometimes more during different seasons. Be prepared to brush your dog every day to get rid of excess hair. Most shepherds love being brushed as they're susceptible to itchy, dry skin and brushing helps stimulate oil glands. Be sure to have a vacuum cleaner on hand to pick up accumulating fluff.

Endearing Quirks Are the Norm

German Shepherds often have interesting "quirks" depending on the dog. Many love gazing out the window to know exactly what's happening outside. This endearing quality makes you feel even more protected. When you take your shepherd for a walk, don't be surprised if she tries to herd you into place. This is normal behavior and is another way your dog shows you she loves you!

They'll Steal Your Heart

Adopting a German Shepherd dog is a wonderful choice for many reasons. When you take the time to train your dog and keep him active, he'll be the best pet you've ever owned. You won't know what it's like to own a German Shepherd until you adopt, but once you do, he'll steal your heart.

Milk-Bone Good Morning Treats For Your Pup (Giveaway)

If you are a pet parent, you know the importance of taking care of your dog like you would your child. We ensure a safe environment and provide plenty of fresh water, food and of course, love. Our dog is a very important member of our family and we do all we can to maintain his health. We take him to the vet for a yearly check-up and vaccinations, as well as make sure he gets ample exercise and fresh air. Our pups depend of their human parents to keep them healthy.

According to “Milk-Bone Human-Canine Health Study” — a survey of 2,000 U.S. dog parents conducted by Milk-Bone brand dog treats (in conjunction a partnership with Learndipity Data Insights) — humans and dogs positively impact the health of one another, from morning routines to physical fitness.

Milk-Bone's Good Morning Daily Vitamin Treats provide beneficial nutrients not found in most dog foods.

Dogs give us so much love that they deserve more than ordinary treats. They deserve treats with benefits.
Little Rocco loves his breakfast time treat!

Consider this: According to the “Milk-Bone Human-Canine Health Study”— a survey of 3,000 U.S. dog parents conducted by Milk-Bone brand dog treats (in conjunction with Learndipity Data Insights) —pet parents who include their pups in family health routines lead healthier lives. In fact, 55% of dog parents say their lives are “full of happiness and joy,” compared to 39% of non-dog parents.

What are four tips to ensure that the entire family - including Fido - is healthy and well?

DOGGY EXERCISE
51% of dog parents say they get more exercise because of their dog -- but 1 out of 3 pet parents wish their dog would get more physical activity

TIP #1: Turn your pups’ morning or evening walking session into a fun, impromptu workout session for the entire family, so both you and Fido will get your daily fit fix.

PUPPY NUTRIENTS
1 out of 3 pet parents are concerned their dog isn't getting enough of the nutrients they need.

TIP #2: Start every day with a vitamin routine for the whole family. Your pup’s should include nutrients not found in most dog foods, like Glucosamine to support healthy joints or DHA to supplement overall wellness, which Milk-Bone’s Good Morning Daily Vitamin Treats provide.

PETTING SESSION CHECK-UPS
Pet parents conduct “well puppy” check-ups, as they would with their child. If a dog is rubbing his eyes, or has oily spots or bumps in his fur, something could be wrong.

TIP #3: Use fun petting sessions to give your dog a quick look over for possible health ailments, like gently rubbing the bottom of his foot pads for sores.

A FAMILY RITUAL
57% of dog parents who also have children involve the kids in their doggy caring care routines, with most reporting that it teaches them good life habits and responsibility.

TIP #4: Your pup needs just as much attention and care as you and your children. When it’s time for your kids to brush their teeth, brush his teeth too (or give him Milk-Bone Brushing Chews).

Meet our new addition

Hi everyone! I wanted to introduce you to our new family member, Rocco Anthony. Rocco came into our lives last week and we are all completely smitten by him. He is a purebred long coat cream and tan chihuahua. He's only 11 weeks old.

Rocco's breeder recommended that we keep him indoors and away from people and other pets until after his next set of puppy shots. He weighs probably 2 pounds and is a great snuggler. Our family just wasn't the same since our beloved Milo passed away in January. The house has been too quiet and we have all been battling the blues and anxiety. Rocco has really turned things around for us emotionally and seems to fit right in with his new family. Funny thing, the breeder told us he had never put his ears up or even seen the light of day, so this would be a big adjustment for him. When we brought him home he shook out of fear for maybe 5 minutes and after that, his ears popped up and his tail wagged steadily. He adjusted immediately.
We are working on the potty training and sleep patterns. It feels like we have a newborn baby all over again. Rocco is a good eater and seems to be growing overnight. We purchased a play yard AKA "dog condo" for him to have a safe place to be when we leave the house for extended periods of time. He's not spoiled at all ;-)

So far things are going well and we all are enjoying Rocco being a part of our family. He even barked for the first time yesterday. He enjoys playing with his toys and is going through the puppy chewing phase. William really enjoys having his own dog. We are happy he has one to grow up with just as the girls did with Milo. We look forward to making a lot of great memories and feel like a little bit of Milo's spirit lives in Rocco. I promise to go easy on the "crazy dog lady" posts. I wish you all a great week!
