Random Thoughts on Ageism, Insulting Women, and How Social Media Plays a Role

I remember for many years thinking that men were the ultimate enemy against women and their self-esteem. That is how it was pushed and publicized for ages. Many people might still think this is the case, but I surely have changed my mind. It turns out that the ones who seem so against the choices women make are in fact, other women, especially the younger ones. If you're thinking I am talking nonsense, it's okay. These are my thoughts, and I have decided to share them.

If you frequent apps like TikTok, X or Instagram, you will see posts from people with every taste, from every walk of life, and with so many differing opinions on anything and EVERYthing. I am noticing so much more lately that a lot of women who are age 50+ post videos responding to negative comments that were left on a previous post. I am the type of woman  who isn’t doing all of that. I simply block the person who was behaving ugly, and delete their comment. You can’t allow yourself to be hurt over some random person on the internet saying something about you that you didn’t like. Believe me, you will get past it and life will go on.

However, these newer “influencers” aren’t having it. They are clapping back and calling folks out. What gets me is that these are often gorgeous women with a huge following, and seemingly living a really nice life. They are speaking out when a follower tells them they are too old to wear something or to behave in a certain way. I saw a TikTok yesterday of a beautiful woman who I believe is a makeup artist with gorgeous gray hair and artfully done makeup. She was responding to a younger woman who commented that she was too old for pigtails. The TikTokker proceeded to style her long locks with pigtails on both sides, and let me tell you something, she looked damn good!

That was her response, and I was internally applauding her for doing what made her feel pretty and happy. After all, the goal for any person is to be happy and feel good about themselves. Once you have that, you can succeed in every area of your life.

Another TikTok I recently viewed was of a stunning beauty in her late 60s wearing a sporty sweatsuit. She was being harassed that she was too old to wear that. I was shocked! What does age have to do with a cute sweatshirt and matching jogger pants? It seems like no matter what women over 50 choose to wear for THEMSELVES, there is always some young female troll telling her she shouldn't wear it.

So the next time you find yourself thinking that a 50+-something woman shouldn’t be wearing crop tops, short skirts, bikinis, or doing what doesn’t suit your taste, please STOP IT. Leave women to be who they are. The world is already harder on a woman’s appearance, so please keep your negative thoughts to yourself. Thanks for stopping by today!

Five Qualities You Need to Be a Successful Woman

Many women are becoming successful business owners and entrepreneurs. You can be successful as your own boss, too. However, you will need to have a certain set of qualities that will make your adventure easier. If you do not own these qualities, you will have to build them. The good news is that it's possible. These are five qualities you'll need to be a successful female business owner or entrepreneur:

Thick Skin

Thick skin is something you will definitely need to have if you want to exist in the current world of business. As a female, you may face challenges that other individuals do not face. You may have to deal with gender biases and stereotypes on top of the general problems people experience as they try to grow their businesses. Thick skin is the ability to separate certain things and let them fly over your head instead of allowing them to stop your growth. You can develop thick skin through coaching, reading, or regular growth experiences.

Courage

You will need to have courage as a woman in the business world. That means you'll need to be a risk-taker like Sarah Cone on Twitter. Risk-takers are people who understand the massive loss they could experience but also understand how much of a gain they could get from taking such a risk. They are gamblers who are not afraid to step out of their comfort zone and take chances. You will have to be this type of person to succeed in many aspects of life, particularly business.

Positivity

Positivity is an absolute must to be a business owner and a leader. In fact, it's necessary to be positive if you want to achieve anything. A pessimistic outlook is not a good one to have if you want to grow your business or entrepreneurship. You'll need to have an "I can" attitude instead of thinking about all the things that could go wrong for you. You've probably heard that you can do anything you set your mind to. That's 100 percent true, but you have to set your mind to it instead of psyching yourself out of your own achievements.

Big-Thinking

Big thinking is a part of positive thinking. It's the aspect of positive thinking that allows you to look at the big picture and see success in your future. You need to be able to envision yourself owning an enterprise even if you don't have two nickels to rub together at this time. You have to believe that you can succeed and you can achieve much more than what might be in your immediate box. Always think outside the box and think bigger than what the norm is. That way, you can stretch your abilities, skills, and talents and make something amazing happen.

Resilience

Finally, you will need to have the resilience to survive. You'll need to be able to bounce back after a fall, let-down, or disappointment. Not all business ideas flourish, but there might be something even better for you. Be willing to walk through another door if one door closes on you. Be willing to adapt to a new set of circumstances if something causes your old ones to disappear. You may have to fight for many years before you get to a level of success you feel comfortable with. Do not give up because your day to thrive will come eventually.

Look over the list of attributes to find qualities that you may need to hone. Do whatever is necessary to build up your strength and skill so that you can succeed in any field as a leader.

Picking The Right Bra To Fit And Flatter Your Body

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are my own like always.

One of those things that any woman can relate to is the great dislike for buying or wearing a bra. Am I right by saying this? It's seems next to impossible to find that perfect bra that fits like a dream. Something that has become extremely necessary for me these days is comfort. I used to choose bras based on how lacy, pretty, or sexy they were. It turns out that those things did nothing for my shape, but also for my comfort level.

The purpose of a bra is to give ample support, as well as enhance your shape under clothing. A bra like Knix's 8-in-1 evolution bra is what you need to do just that. They boast about reinventing intimates for real life, and that is the purpose of what women really need in a bra. We need something for our very real, everyday lives, with comfort being #1.

Why choose Knix's 8-in-1 evolution bra?

  • No underwires! No more uncomfortable wires that dig into your body. You still get the much needed lift and support.
  • Constructed using 4-way stretch fabrics to match your every move, and mold to your unique shape.
  • It is reversible, and comes with swappable straps
  • No itchy lace or unnecessary embellishments
  • Moisture-wicking, anti-odor and quick dry for a more active lifestyle
  • It feels like you're not wearing anything << YES, please!
  • Smooth fit for women of many different sizes

The 8-in-1 evolution bra comes in more simple, muted colors for everyday wear. So whether you are heading out to work, running errands, or an evening out, you can depend on feeling comfortable, yet supported. And how how nice would it be to not have that feeling of wanting to rip your bra off at the end of the day? Check out Knix for your intimate wear. You won't be disappointed!

The Four Most Common Cosmetic Surgery Procedures for Women

Women all around the world have turned to cosmetic surgeons to help them achieve the physique and face that they desire. There are many different procedures available to women that feel they would like to change some aspect of their features and appearance.

Cosmetic surgery provides women with an option to take control of their body and eliminate their insecurities by improving their self-image. Here are the top four most-requested cosmetic procedures of 2017.

#1 Breast Augmentation
One of the most widely requested and well-researched cosmetic surgery procedures is breast augmentation. Many people know this by the term ‘breast implants’. However, an augmentation procedure is not meant to be thought of as just inserting some implants. Breast augmentation can also include lifts and tucks of the breast, as well as work on the aureole and nipple area.

Specialist surgeons will arrange a personalized consultation that gives the patient a choice of size and shape of their new breasts. The procedure is relatively complicated but comfortable enough for surgeons to complete without any severe complications.
Recovery time from breast augmentation is minimal, with most recovering in as little as six weeks. After the healing is complete, there is a follow-up process for the patient to complete to ensure no complications occur in the future.

Breast augmentation has been proven to have a lasting impact on the self-image of women and increases their confidence and self-image which is why it is the worlds most requested cosmetic procedure.

#2  Rhinoplasty
This procedure refers to cosmetic surgery on the nose. Statistics show that more than 220,000 women underwent a rhinoplasty operation in 2017. Colloquially referred to as a ‘nose job,' rhinoplasty offers women with insecurities around the size and shape of their nose, an opportunity to sculpt it into their ideal image.

Rhinoplasty is not always conducted purely for an aesthetic purpose. Some women may have difficulty breathing through their nose due to an abnormality such as a deviated septum. Rhinoplasty can reconstruct the nose and ensure the patient proper breathing ability through their nose.

#3 Abdominoplasty
Commonly referred to as a ‘tummy tuck,' Abdominoplasty removes unsightly cellulite and sagging skin from the abdominal area. Women that may have recently lost a significant amount of weight, or are recovering from pregnancy may have sagging skin. A tummy tuck removes the excess skin and adipose tissue from the abdominal area, returning the abdomen to its typical structure and shape. Abdominoplasty is the most popular form of cosmetic surgery in Australia, with many older patients requesting the procedure.

#4 Jaw Re-Shaping
This procedure is prevalent among Asian communities. Asians tend to experience a broad jaw-line in their genetic predisposition. This jaw-line creates the appearance of a round-face, even if the persons BMI is low. There are procedures available that shave down the jawline, however, this kind of intrusive surgery can be intimidating for many people.

There is a non-surgery alternative offered by top aesthetic clinics such as Dore Aesthetics. This non-surgical procedure involves jawline contouring sessions that are performed every week until the jawline is re-shaped to the desired ‘almond’ appearance.

The Final Thought
If you feel that your self-image could use a boost, then speak to a cosmetic surgeon about the options open to you. Remember to get a second opinion and only consider the surgery if you feel that it will improve your quality of life.

The Best Things to Wear With Leggings, Jeggings and those Skinny Jeans

They’re a classic part of our wardrobes at this point: leggings, jeggings, and skinny jeans. Basically, anything that doesn’t put a lot of fabric around our ankles and show off just how long our legs are. These are comfortable, fun, and tend to be easier to wear than anything else. However, it can get a little difficult to find something that you really want to wear with them.

Add Some Scrunched Up Hobo Socks
Looking for a little more warmth over your leggings or jeggings? Adding a great pair of socks at any length can make the look feel warmer and cozier. Go for the classic legwarmers look or just add a chunky pair of socks. There are so many options out there with great detailing, from buttons to lace.

Just make sure that you have some breathing room and that your socks are at the same height.

Dare to Go High with High Shafted Boots
How high are you willing to go? Since leggings, jeggings, and skinny jeans are all tight all the way up, it is easy to pair them with high shafted boots – go to the knee or to the thigh for a put together look. No matter what else you have on, these boots help you to look just a little more put together.

Have smaller legs? Add the socks mentioned above under the boots for a better fit and extra warm protection.

Don’t Be Afraid of Sky High Heels
Part of the reason we wear skinny jeans and leggings is because they make our legs look amazing – but so do high heels. When you pair a great pair of pumps with this type of legwear, you get a really amazing final look that will make you look leaner, taller, and more confident with every step that you take.

Make sure that if you are wearing leggings you use closed toe shoes – especially if you have a little bit that has to stick near the toe!

Classic, Cool, Country Cowboy Boots for Casual Days
One of the classic ways to wear your skinny jeans is with a great pair of cowboy boots. Whether you are going to a country concert, a music festival, Target, or even working outside, cowboy boots are always a lot of fun.

Just make sure that your belt and your boots match – no fashion faux pas.

Modern, Patterned Tunics Make a Perfect Pairing
Tunics have returned in a big way, and they have no sign of going away anytime soon. Whether you pick a simple tunic that skirts around your curves or you belt your tunics, they look great with a pair of leggings sticking out from under them. Mix and match styles for a fashion forward look or pair them with similar styles for a cohesive feel.

Even better, take one small element from the tunic and match it to your leggings or jeggings.

Under Your Boyfriend’s (or Husband’s Shirt)
Have to dressed in a hurry? Want to be comfortable? Take an oversized shirt from your husband or boyfriend (or buy one for yourself, this is 2017!) and throw it over skinny jeans, jeggings, or leggings. The different between the tightness on your legs and the bagginess of the shirt will make for great visual appeal. This is a great look for just hanging out around the house or spending lazy weekends running errands.

Just make sure he hasn’t left any stains on it!

Cute and Comfy Oversized Sweaters
Just like an oversized shirt, oversized sweaters are a great way stay comfortable and still look cute. For days when it is just a little chilly outside, adding an oversized sweater or even a hoodie can be a comfortable look.

Add sneakers to make the look more casual or high shafted boots to look a little bit like that famous pop singer…

Chic Belted Trench Coat For Rainy Days
Raining outside? Most of us reach for the skinny jeans or leggings on those days because they fit easily into our rain boots and they don’t get as wet if we step into a puddle. Throw a cute trench coat over for some more protection and a cute look. Add a belt to give your body more shape, especially if you have a longer trench coat.

Match your wellies and your trench coat and then go for a pop of color with your leggings if you are feeling fun.

Professionally Tailored Blazer At the Office
Want to be comfortable and casual but still look like a tough business woman? Add a nicely tailored blazer and a crisp shirt overtop your leggings or skinny jeans. This look is still approachable and comfortable but still professional enough. It is also a look that easily transitions from work to picking up the kids, going to coffee, or even going out.

With a Kicky Mini Dress
Have patterned leggings? Put them under a great solid mini dress and add a blazer for a look you can wear into the office. If you have solid leggings, you can put them under just about any dress to really set off the pattern and rich colors of the dress.

No matter what you do, make sure that you have a great selection of skinny jeans, leggings, and jeggings in your wardrobe. They come in many different colors, washes, styles, and levels of distressing, so you’ll have a great option for every event.

9 Types of Shoes Every Woman Should Own (Guest Post)

Even though people say that diamonds are every woman’s best friend, Carrie Bradshaw, as well as thousands of other, will disagree and say that shoes are the one thing that really makes them happy. In this article we are going to look at the classic shoes a fashion sensitive woman should own.

    I.Pointed Pumps

The black pump can pull together any outfit. Choose a black suede or leather pump, combine it with a gray top and suede trousers, and you’re ready to go and take over the world.

    II. Ankle-Strap Sandals

A high heel shoe, adds style and comfort, lengthens your legs and can be combined with almost anything. Sandals are a great choice for the summer season!

    III. Ankle Boots

If you are looking for that little edge that you want to give to your look, ankle boots are an excellent choice to do that. Pair them with jeans or a black letter dress for a ‘wow’ effect.

    IV. Luxe Loafer

This shoe, initially menswear, is the excellent daily shoe. It’s flat and comfortable, slips easily and looks great on slimmed jeans.

    V. Animal-Print Heels

Every one of us needs to have an animal print in their closet. I know it’s not the everyday shoe that you are going to wear, but you will need them to pair with the gorgeous black dress you own.

    VI. Metallic Heels

Metallic heels are an excellent choice for an evening look. They are neutral, smooth, and add just the right amount of glamour for your night out. The great thing about them is that you can also rock them during day time. You can even use this aldo shoes coupon code for more savings.

    VII. Casual Sneakers

So far, we’ve mostly talked about heels and boots, but then again, what is a woman’s closet with a fashionable sneaker? They are perfect for the weekend and can be worn with both jeans and dresses.

    VIII. Flat Sandals

At this point you are probably looking at your wardrobe, thinking, well all of those are great, but none of them fit my cut-off shorts and flo-ral sundresses I bought for the summer. The flat sandals are perfect with pretty much anything and as we’ve already mentioned, look great with floral dresses! Go and check Revitalign Sandals for some great look-ing and extremely comfortable sandals.

    IX. Tall Flat Boots

Tall Boots will never go out of style. They are the essential go-to footwear for the fall and early spring. Just use them to add style to the t-shirt and jeans look or combine them with a short skirt and long coat, to add flair to your style.

Conclusion: Those are our top picks of shoes every woman should have in their wardrobe. This way, you will never be unprepared for any event, whether it be to just quickly jump to the store or by some lucky coincidence, the Oscars. We hope that you’ve enjoyed the list and if so, stay tuned for more great tips on fashion.

Gear Up For Spring With NIC+ZOE

Today's post is sponsored by NIC+ZOE. All opinions expressed are my own.

I don't know about you, but I am so ready for Spring to hurry up and get here. I can just feel the warmth, hear the birds chirping and I get excited about wearing lighter clothing. The layers and heaviness of winter is starting to get to me. I have been thinking about adding some new items to my wardrobe this spring. I was browsing around the NIC +ZOE site at their Spring Collection. Everything looks so airy and feminine. I am really digging the soft colors and materials.

The Batiste Flirt Skirt is simply gorgeous. I love the length, cut and color choices (ash, black onyx and midnight). It is conservative enough to wear to work, but also girly enough to for a date night or girl's night out. I really love it in the ash color, but I always feel like you can't go wrong with black! Just add a light blouse, a couple of chunky bangles and some strappy heels, and you'll have a beautiful look for spring.

The Tassel Top is the perfect feminine tunic style top for spring. I really like the sandstone color. It is a very classic and sophisticated piece. I think it would look nice paired with skinny jeans and slim pants and either heels or ballet flats. You can't ever go wrong with a classic look.

One thing you must have in your wardrobe is a couple of cardigans and this Holey Cardigan is adorable! It is really different and versatile. You really can wear it with any type of pants or skirt. I really love the simple look of the Sketchbook Pant. Dressed up or down, it is perfect!

NIC+ZOE really has some great pieces. I love the modern and feminine style that they have captured so well. I highly recommend classic pieces that you can mix and match to get the most out of each garment. Check out this short video showcasing their Spring + Summer 2016 featuring Coco Rocha... It screams vintage mixed with modern sophistication!

Check out all NIC+ZOE has to offer and be sure to follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the latest styles and promotions.

Pull Off Polished On a Budget

Whether it’s for an interview or a romantic date, polishing up your look only means good things. From makeup overhauls to new duds, posture practice to new accessories, implementing small changes can make a big difference.

Perfect Your Posture
You probably don’t realize just how much your posture affects your overall appearance. Slouching can bow your shoulders, causing you to look unkempt, shorter, and heavier. Poor posture can lead to various health consequences including back pain, so it’s in your best interest to work on perfecting your stance. Take a moment and consider your posture right now. Probably not the best, right? We all do it. Bending over at our desks, craning our necks down at our screen, slouching into the couch. Without making a conscious effort, it’s easy for us to fall into bad posture habits.

How to Improve It
There’s easy ways to better your posture, but they may not be what you expect. Contrary to popular belief, keeping your spine completely straight does not contribute to better posture. The best posture is brought about by maintaining two curves: the concave curve from your upper back to the base of your spine and the concave curve from base of your head to your shoulders. Keep your body weight balanced on the balls of your feet, and pretend your head and spine are being held up by a string from the ceiling, and remain aware of this throughout the day. Create alarms on your phone that will remind you to straighten your posture at hourly intervals if you find it hard to stick to.

Revamp Your Makeup Routine
Another easy way to polish your appearance is to overhaul your everyday makeup routine. If you’re using the same products and techniques you’ve been using for 10 years, it’s time to switch it up.

Switch Up Your Foundation
You want your foundation to look flawless without appearing cakey. Use a foundation that can create a matte finish and control your oil production throughout the day; my personal favorite is the Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation.

A New Lip
The nude lip is out, color is in. Especially in these cold winter months, don’t be afraid to try some deeper hues. Try a deep berry color or a rich red—don’t be afraid of the color. If you do go loud with your lip, keep your eyes natural looking, with just a swipe of mascara so as to avoid the clown look.

Try a Different Liner
Instead of sticking with the same old boring brown that you first tried when you were thirteen, incorporate some exciting hues into your eyeliner. Depending on your eye color, there are various options that can really make those irises pop. Try out copper if your peepers are hazel, use grey to make blue eyes stand out, and stick to light purple for brown eyes.

Relieve Your Stress
Do you want to know the one thing that doesn’t look good on anyone? Stress. Excess stress forces your body to produce a variety of hormones including cortisol, which results in more oil production and subsequently more skin problems, including acne. From under eye circles to puffy skin, stress wreaks havoc on our physical appearance to be sure, but it can also be deadly. From obesity to heart issues, you have every reason in the world to better manage your stress levels. Get more sleep, exercise, receive regular massages, and talk to a professional if your stress feels unmanageable.

Update Your Accessories
Don’t forget to give your accessories a facelift. Update your jewelry collection with understated pieces that you can wear daily to dress up any casual wear. I have a personal affinity for jewelry with a personal touch; these necklaces can be customized with your initial and go with anything and everything. Update what you carry with you as well, even down to your electronics. Grab a modern iPhone case and stay prompt with a classic Daniel Wellington watch. Remember that every detail contributes to the bigger picture.

Focus on the Details
Looking polished is about paying attention to the tiny details. Maintaining your manicure and pedicure do more than you know, and you don’t need to head to the nail salon to have your fingers and toes looking their best. Use a high-quality nail polish brand like Essie to avoid chipping, and don’t skip the base and top coats. The extra couple of swipes will be worth the wear you get out of your polish. Another detail that makes a difference? Your eyebrows. Threading may hurt, but it does look oh so good once finished.

Looking polished is a matter of paying attention to the details you might have shirked before. Incorporate these little changes into your daily routine and get that “pulled together” look we all seek.

Laugh, Play and Live in Freedom Again & Win a $25 Prize (CLOSED)

I have mentioned a few times before on the blog about a sensitive subject that affects so many women (1 in 3!)... Light bladder leakage (LBL). Not a sexy thing, I know. It is however a fact. Some women leak a tiny bit of urine when doing simple things like laughing, exercising, coughing or sneezing. Most people would think this only happens to old ladies, pregnant ladies, or those who have had several children. This is false! Even women in their early 20's can have LBL. 1 in 3 means there are so many women out there with this very problem who are likely to stay quiet about it, and with good reason. I sure as heck don't want to talk about it. My daughters often tell me funny stories and I immediately feel like I have to cross my legs. They make little jokes asking if I need one of those "Poise things". Insert the full side eye here.

Using Poise liners is a simple and discreet way to help deal with LBL and no one has to know. Poise Very Light Absorbency Liners are the perfect solution and absorb 3 times more than the average liner made for periods. They are very comfortable and keep you feeling fresh and confident all day long.

Now you can cough, laugh, sneeze or play with no worries. I never thought I would need a product like this, but I'm sure no woman would. You can save $4.00 when you purchase Poise Liners from Sam's Club. It really is a great value and the best part is you won't have to buy them very often. The club pack contains 132 liners for only $11.68 (9 cents each!), so you won't run out quickly. You can beat feeling confident to simply LIVE.

If you aren't a Sam's Club member, I highly recommend you become one. I love buying in bulk and getting more bang for my buck. Want some great news? One lucky Mom Files reader will win a $25 Sam's Club gift card OR $25 PayPal cash (reader's choice) to help stock up on Poise Liners. Enter below...

The Women's Roadmap To Health

National Girlfriends Day was earlier this month, but it's always a good thing to have a friend remind you about keeping up with your annual wellness check-ups. It's easy for time to pass you by or to just put it off. Joining forces with your friends can be the push you need to get things done. My doctor even has a group of girlfriends who all schedule their annual woman's check-up in the same week and get together in one evening for margaritas to celebrate each other getting their health screenings done. I think that is such a cute idea.

Check out the infographic below from Oscar Health Insurance Company for details on what specific screenings you should have done and when. They're a new company wanting to shake up the health care field and help their members be proactive about their health through their various incentives. If you're in these areas, check out their health insurance plans in New Jersey and New York. Feel free to share with your girlfriends and family members.

National Women's Health Week is May 10-16- Tips for staying healthy #NWHW

Did you know that Mother's Day kicks of the 16th annual National Women's Health Week? As women, especially moms, it is so important to take charge of our health. I am officially in my forties and have been staying active in keeping up with different areas that affect my overall health and well being. Regular doctor's visits, a healthy diet and exercise are a must as well as a good oral care regimen. I just went to my doctor last week to get labs done and learn the latest updates on my current health. It turns out that my vitamin D levels have dropped extremely low again. Normal levels are between 30-100 and mine was at 19. I'm so glad I met with my doctor and found this out. It explained a lot in regards to how I have been feeling lately. I can now take the steps necessary to get my levels back up so I can have the energy to do all that I have to each day.

To inspire women to lead a healthier lifestyle, Colgate recommends women follow these small steps provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health:
  1. Visit a doctor or nurse to receive regular checkups and preventive screenings. Schedule your annual well-woman visit on National Women’s Checkup Day, Monday, May 11. Use this time to discuss your health goals, concerns or questions.
  2. Get active. Try to incorporate more physical activity into your daily routine. Walk or bike to work or park your car further away from your destination.
  3. Eat healthy. Making healthier food choices can be as simple as using a smaller plate at meals to help control portions or choosing water instead of soda and other sugary drinks.
  4. Pay attention to mental health, including getting enough sleep and managing stress. Try and set aside at least 15 minutes each day in your busy schedule to do something for yourself.
  5. Avoid unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, texting while driving, and not wearing a seatbelt or bicycle helmet.
Be sure to follow Women's Health on Twitter  and Facebook for important updates and take the pledge to help take control of your health. As women, we have to be strong and present for so many people, we must not forget about ourselves. Wishing you all a very Happy Mother's Day! xo

Aging and Changing, Being 41

I recently turned 41 (gulp). It seems so strange actually writing that number as my age. I really don't feel that old. I don't even know how 41 is supposed to feel. I know one thing though; I'm surely not 20 or 30 anymore. Many things have changed and I have had to take steps to adapt. I went to the doctor earlier this year for a full physical. It had been a few years since I last had one. I admit, I was very nervous. So nervous in fact that my blood pressure registered a lot higher than normal. I have a terrible family history of heath ailments. What if I find out I am diabetic? What if I have high cholesterol? What if I do end up with high blood pressure? I was really afraid. I knew I had to suck it up and get checked out thoroughly.

It only took a couple days to get the first set of lab results back. I felt like I couldn't breathe when I saw the doctor's office phone number show up on my phone. My heart raced and I had to take a deep breath. My doctor informed me that I had a vitamin D deficiency. I am not surprised by that because it is very common for brown-skinned people to have that issue. For whatever reason, our skin does not absorb vitamin D from the sun like a fair-skinned person would. I was prescribed a once a week, 2 month supplement to boost my levels. I noticed that after 4 weeks of taking the supplement I felt different. I had higher than normal energy levels, my nails were stronger and my hair seemed to be growing overnight. Besides the vitamin D deficiency, the doctor informed me my hormone levels that control my thyroid were abnormal. She asked me if I had been experiencing any of the symptoms like rapid heartbeat, weight fluctuations, sweating, and several other things. I told her no and insisted that the test wasn't accurate. I think she sensed my denial and was kind enough to entertain me. She ordered that I retake labs in 30 days. I took time to research hypothyroidism in depth. I had a light bulb go off in my head. Thyroid issues are hereditary. Almost every woman on my mother's side of the family has been diagnosed and is being treated by medication. I also realized that what I thought was extreme anxiety I have been experiencing for about a year or so was actually heart palpitations. I called up my doctor and she was very polite in not saying, "I told you so". She assured me that being put on medication wasn't the end of the world and it would help my situation.

I have been on Synthroid for almost 90 days now and had my labs done a few weeks back to see of the meds are helping. It turns out that my hormone levels are normal and the medication is indeed doing its job. As much as I did not want to be put on any type of medication for the rest of my life, it is what it is. I have my health under control and will be certain to keep up with regular doctor visits to ensure it stays that way. I have advised a few friends who complained of fatigue, anxiety and weight fluctuations to go get lab work done. I have one friend who told me she found out that she too was vitamin D deficient. None of us are getting any younger so it is important to get into the doctor's office at least once a year.

Do you have regular check-ups/physicals with you doctor?

New Fall Line from eShakti and a Giveaway (2 winners) CLOSED

CLOSED-
Winners are Team Jacob and Alicia- congratulations!

It's almost my favorite season of the year, Fall! I am really looking forward to some crisp, cool air and the sights and smells of all things Autumn. I was excited to get to check out the new Fall line from eShakti and got to pick out a dress of my choice to review. I had the hardest time choosing because I am a big fan of very classic and vintage dresses. The most unique thing about eShakti is the customization. You can choose from standard sizes or go with detailed sizing for a more precise fit. Depending on which dress you go with, you have options of pockets or no pockets, removing embroidery, dress length, sleeve style and even what neckline you prefer.

I have ordered a dress in the past and found that they run a bit small. I went with a size 8 and picked out the Victoria dress in black. I was attracted to the ruffles on the top and the overall feminine flow of the dress. I decided to keep the same sleeves and length and opted for a lower neckline. I also liked the idea of pockets so I kept that too. I absolutely LOVE the fit of the dress! I feel like this dress was made just for me. My family really loved the way I looked and think I picked the perfect style. I was surprised at how perfectly it fit and the side sash really completed the look. I liked how the ruffles continued along the back. I can easily dress things up with some accessories or even wearing my hair up. You can't ever go wrong with a little black dress!
I have my eye on the eggplant color in this same style. One thing I am really happy about is that I went with a larger size. I normally can wear a women's size 4 but something told me to go with the 8. It was perfect! Be sure to check out eShakti on the web, Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter.

I am so excited that the kind folks from eShakti are offering a giveaway for two Mom Files readers to each win a $50 gift card. There are so many styles, colors and pieces to choose from! Enter below: a Rafflecopter giveaway

Giveaway is open to Canada and US Residents only. Giveaway ends on September 22, 2013 and two winners will be selected at random and contacted via email to claim prize. Be sure to follow contest rules stated in Rafflecopter widget. Mom Files is not responsible for any lost or stolen prizes. Good luck!

I received a dress at no cost in exchange for an honest review and to help spread the word about the new fall line. All opinions are my own as always.

One of my favorite beauty products

I think over the years, I have tried virtually every beauty product you could get from a drugstore. One thing I use every night is a makeup removing wipe. I have tried so many brands but I go back to the same one every time. Oddly enough, the Walmart brand called Equate beauty has been the best one by far.
I love how soft and gentle the towelettes feel and they are generously sized. They have just the right amount of cleanser in them that really do the trick of getting my eye makeup off with ease. Since I use them primarily for eye makeup removal, I don't have to use a whole wipe. I tear a wipe in two or three and maximize my uses from one pack. My daughters do the same thing and they last a long time. We purchase it in a 2-pack for around $6. Not bad at all! I don't buy them because they are inexpensive. I buy them because they actually work!

What do you use to remove makeup?

I swore I would never do it. I lied...

I have often talked about embracing my gray hair. I said I would never consider coloring my hair. I said I would let nature do what it wanted to. I lied. I am starting to freak out over all the gray hair popping up all through my jet black locks. Most people think I am crazy and don't notice my grays. I notice them. It looks like a silver fountain cascading at the top of my head. I don't like it. I just happened to qualify for a Klout Perk a couple weeks ago and it was for hair color by Revlon. I even got to choose the color. I am way too chicken to change the actual color of my hair so I chose black. I plan to cover my gray when I can get up the nerve to go through with it. I better check the expiration date on the package.
I think the whole turning 40 this year is freaking me out just a little bit.

Shabby Apple Dress Review & $50 Gift Card Giveaway

**Closed**
Winner is Loremil
When I was contacted by Shabby Apple to work with them, I was thrilled. I have always admired their gorgeous dresses over the years and just adore the retro style. I was able to choose a dress to review and believe me, it was a very hard choice to make! There was something about the La Noche Negra dress that attracted me. I think the first thing was the color. I can't seem to stay away from black! I also really loved the idea of that front panel/pleat. It seemed like it would be good at helping to mask that "mom tummy" a bit. The back of the dress is the same way as well.
I ordered the dress in a size XS. I was a little leery about the size so I read some reviews and made my decision from there. It turns out that the extra small was just right for me. The dress fit me almost identical to the model in the photo. The only difference was the length. I am 5'2" so it fell right below my knee. I like how it fit me around the mid section. I think the design was very slimming. My husband and children really loved it on me. The part that surprised me was that the dress had pockets. I thought that was clever. The panel/pleat in both the front and back were flattering. It is made of  lightweight cotton poplin material (perfect for the warmer months) and the big, metallic buttons added a little something extra to this very simple dress. This dress is perfect for me since I tend to like a more casual look and it can be dressed up with the right shoes, accessories and hair style.

I haven't shaved my legs in 6 weeks

It's true, I am not lying. I haven't shaved my legs in 6 weeks!  Mind you, I usually shave 3-4 times a week. How is this possible? I started using VEET® Hair Removal Cream . I received a bottle of the VEET Gel Cream Pump to test out and have been using it once a week, for 6 weeks. I have noticed smoother skin longer compared to traditional shaving. It makes me wonder why I haven't been using VEET all this time! It is so easy to use and takes about 3-6 minutes. When you wash the cream off, all you feel is super-moisturized and smooth skin. I don't know if I will ever shave again!
About this product:

Get touchably smooth skin for up to twice as long as shaving with VEET® Hair Removal Cream. Unlike shaving that can sometimes dry the delicate surface of your skin, the formula from VEET contains ingredients that can help restore skin's hydration levels. This formula is designed to work close to the root of the hair. Therefore your hair can take noticeably longer to grow back and your skin stays smoother for longer!* This specially designed Sensitive formula is enriched with Aloe Vera and Vitamin E to ensure maximum respect of your skin.
*Than shaving with your regular razor.

There are some things women keep quiet about

As a woman, I know that there are some subjects that I prefer not to discuss. I think it's normal to keep quiet about some things. Did you know that the top 3 women's health issues that are least discussed are Fertility, Fibromyalgia and Constipation? Although the first two might not relate to every woman, the "C-word" has affected us some time in our life. Studies show that women are even less likely to discuss constipation as they get older. Thankfully the female members in my home are open about the subject. I received a fabulous gift kit filled with products samples just for women from Boehringer Ingelheim, maker of Dulcolax. My kit came with: a Pink Lands End small tote bag, Tarte Lip Gloss, Clinique Sunscreen,  Dulcolax for Women product sample, One A Day Women’s Multivitamin Tablet and a box of Tampax Pearl.

The main focus behind the kit was to get me talking about women's constipation and how Dulcolax for Women can help. The first thing that stuck out to me was that it was 'gentle enough for sensitive stomachs'. This is a good thing since most laxatives can give you severe stomach pain. I am so glad to have this on hand since one of my daughters will be going away on a week-long trip and generally comes home feeling constipated. I know they will get put to good use! Here are some points about Dulcolax:
  • Dulcolax Laxative Tablets for Women have a comfort coating that protects the stomach and helps women's bodies relieve constipation.
  • Gives women the gentle help they want, and the strength they need for effective constipation relief.
  • They provide dependable, overnight relief from occasional constipation in 6-12 hours.
  • Dulcolax Women is now available in 25-count packs and sold at local retailers nationwide.
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should always ask their health care provider before taking Dulcolax Laxative Tablets.

Here is some great information from  Dr. Jennifer Wider (Medical Adviser for Cosmopolitan Magazine and the Society for Women's Health Research) for "Unmentionable Women's Health Tips:

Ladies, talk more openly about the 'C-word'- Constipation!
Research shows that women suffer from constipation more frequently than men, but preventing and treating constipation is almost always simple if you address it like any other health problem. Buying a Dulcolax product or discussing your condition with your doctor can be the first step toward relief.

If pregnant and constipation is persistent, talk with your doctor about an OTC Option
About half of pregnant women experience constipation at some point during their pregnancy. If the usual steps taken to treat your constipation, such as changes to your diet and lifestyle, are not working, your OBGYN may recommend an OTC oral laxative to help. With a comfort coating that protects your stomach and helps you gently relieve constipation, Dulcolax Laxative Tablets for Women can be an effective constipation option to keep you regular. It also provides overnight relief in 6 to 12 hours.

Some heatlhy (and simple) steps to stay constipation free
The good news is that although constipation is common, you can take some easy steps to help prevent it from occurring. These steps include:
  • Make sure to include enough fiber in your diet, which includes eating more fruit, vegetables, wholegrain, nuts, and oats. A sudden increase in fiber may make you feel bloated so increase your increase gradually.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration-and try to cut back on your intake of caffeine, alcohol, and fizzy drinks.
  • The toilet is your friend; make sure not to ignore it! If you have the urge to go to the toilet but ignore it, you an significantly increase your chances of experiencing constipation.
  • Remember that the best time to use the toilet for "#2" is the first think in the morning or 30 minutes after a meal.
  • Exercise! Exercise! Exercise! Regular exercise will reduce your risk of getting constipation.

I really hope you get a lot out of this information as I did. If you would like more information on Dulcolax products or more tips on fighting constipation, check out the Dulcolax website.
