Do people take your blogging for a joke?

A lot of times when I tell people I am related to or those I know very well that I am a blogger, they say they don't have time for the computer like I do. They brush off what I do as if it is strictly a hobby and act as if I must not have anything better to do with my time. I hear things like "I don't know how people can stay on Facebook all day" or "I don't have time to look at blogs and don't know how stuff like that even works". Well I have been doing this now for years and at first it was more of a personal journal/social thing. It has blossomed over time and I now have PR firms I work with that provide me with products to review, host giveaways and sometimes even pay me to write. Blogging has become a part-time business for me. It has allowed me the opportunity to contribute to my household no matter how small it is. I don't want to sit on a computer all day long. I don't want to Tweet or Facebook all day long. I do it throughout the day in between taking care of my homemaker/SAHM duties. I do it because it helps my family. I never set out to become a "Mommy Blogger". It just happened one day. It is a lot of work to put out good posts and reviews. Some are easier than others. I really wish I would get the respect I deserve for my contributions as a mom blogger.  After all, don't moms know best anyway?

  1. Have you ever shown your work to family members? I don't know that my family undersatands it either. Blogging is still a hobby for me although it has provided some cool opportunities.

  2. @Laila- I have showed them and I typically get the "I don't have time for this" thing.

  3. My family (which is a small circle) doesn't really understand blogging but, they are supportive. But, they don't take it as being anything serious and until I am in the big times -I doubt they will. I do get questions from them to explain "again" what I do and how it works. Which I always respond when I start teaching a class they should sign up.

  4. Yes, I have definitely been met with mocking looks and incredulity when I tell people I'm a blogger. Blogging is a business, and I wish more (non-bloggers) understood that.

  5. I never tell anyone I'm a blogger because the term "blogger" is still looked at as a hobby. I tell people that I write for various online publications or "web sites" and I help brands market their products and services to moms... something like always triggers the "oh's and ah's". It's funny the response you get when you word things a little differently.

  6. I consider you to be an excellent blogger and one of the reasons why there are still good blogs to read.

Three years ago I would've probably stated the same, concerning blogging. But as of today the reading and writing and learning and overall experience has been really enlightening.

Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder so I hardly ever explain things unseen to others, anyway.

  7. This is why you show them versus telling them. When you smile and are happy and doing your thing, people usually jump on the bandwagon. When they ask how you do it? Just say "check out Momfiles.com and you will see." Nuff said.. What is the anthem? Everyday, I'm HUSTLIN'! Be the BEST and Keep Blogging.
